Hi, can someone recommend a fault code reader for a 2005 VW Polo 1.2 9n?

I'm looking for something cost effective so can't afford VAGCOM VCDS. 

I only want something that will help me diagnose errors so don't need anything to unlock options etc.

Most handheld/standalone readers will be nearly as much or more, with far less capability.

 

Depends a bit if you have a windows laptop available to put the software on, and/or if you want something that sits permanently in the glovebox for 'on the (side of the) road' checking/reading.
