Hi,

 

I have a 52 plate Polo 9N and the air conditioning control doesn’t work properly. It is completely off with no power to the fans and no sir coming outs on settings 0 through to 3, but as soon as I turn it to setting 4, the maximum power, they turn on. I’ve read that this is just as simple as needing to replace some sort of coil type fuse? Although I’m not sure where I would find one or where it is to replace it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially in this heat.

Interior fan resistor failed. Fiddly but very doable.

You can get them for about a tenner on ebay for pattern parts

Small hands a big advantage when swapping out/in.

Thank you, so as long as it has that part number on eBay I should be good to go shouldn’t I? 

Should be, but some would argue that a pattern part may not last like a genuine one would, but the price difference will be considerable. 

Last (only) two I've bought were from energized customs whose ebay name was much the same as that. So far so good but it's less than a year later. 

Worth checking and changing the pollen filter if you haven't examined it recently, low airflow will lead to more heat in the resistor, directly due to (less) air cooling, but also because the fan motor will work harder/slower against restrictions, so drawing more current, I think.

that’s all good advice, thank you. Another thing with my AC is that sometimes doesn’t get cold, it did the other day, but now it doesn’t, could this be to do with the resistor that I need?

Nope, more likely the refrigerant level is low leading to limited cooling 'headroom' plus very high ambient temps.
