Hello! New to the forum here, and recently bought a '93 Breadvan 1.3 CL. It's only got 40k on the clock, but as it was stood for 12 years, the garage have recommended a cam belt/water pump change (belt not been visually checked). They quoted £200, £88 + VAT being for parts.

Trouble is, I can't seem to find which is the right part - online, a Hepu set was going for £34 (now disappeared). Can anyone please point me in the right direction for part numbers and spares shops?

It's been a very long time since I worked on a car, and I've already spent £500+ in 2 weeks.. the purse strings need tightening!

Yeah that was my thought re price too! (£220 for a full serice was shocking too, but it's surprisingly hard to find a decent garage round here). 😒

ever think about getting some tools and doing the service yourself ?...okay maybe not the cambelt first try but theyre super cheap n easy to work on

I'd suggest alternator belt too, if that's done 40,000 miles. You might be able to see small cracks between the teeth. Better now than a cold winter when it's having to work harder for rear screen heater and lights and fan.

Shelf life of a v-belt is 6 years according to Gates - who might have  a vested interest.

£200 doesn't seem unfair to be honest, I'd assume they're changing the waterpump in with that? If so, that's £30 retail markup on £50 worth of parts. If their hourly is £40-60, then 2-3 hours sounds fair. If they're doing it by the book, they'll be taking the bottom aux pulley off to get the cambelt cover off, which can turn into a bit of a nightmare, particularly if you're using hand tools.
