Hi folks,

Just joined the forum and hoping you can help me with a wee problem. I have a 2004 1.4 automatic which has a starting issue when the engine is hot. It starts fine when cold but when warm it can take up to 6 attempts to start.

I have replaced the coolant temperature sensor and have also had it scanned for fault codes but nothing is showing up. 

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

If it was a carburettor car I would have loads of suggestions!

 

But for injection with no engine fault codes I'll go with

• air filter very clogged
• loose battery connections
• worn starter motor
• weak fuel pump
• leaky fuel pressure regulator

Was the coolant sensor a genuine VW/TPS or one from ECP/GSF or similar pattern part ? as the quality of their sensors is questionable at best

Dvderlm The air filter is brand new, as is the pressure regulator. Battery terminals are fine, starter sounds strong. Not looked at the fuel pump yet.

Nige The coolant sensor was ECP I believe. I'll try a genuine vw part as its inexpensive  and see if that makes a difference and report back.

Might be worth trying it with the temp sender unplugged.
