I have just purchased a lovely MK3 polo facelift for my son. He wanted an older car to keep as a future classic. All was well with the car then sadly discovered a whine on 5th gear. Upon inspection i discovered the gearbox was empty of oil so the gearbox is more than likely toast !  I have been quoted £950plus vat minimum for a rebuild with new clutch which is crazy money, can someone tell me where i can locate a good quality recon box to have fitted? Not some dodgy ebay unguaranteed unit... i cant find anything. So miffed as this is my sons long awaited 18th birthday present. Car is an x reg 2000 1.0litre e

a proper rebuild , plus decent clutch and labour will be about that

 

otherwise take a chance on a used gearbox from a breaker /classifieds for around 100£
