1.4TSi to 1.6TSi

As we know that the CAVE is a weak engine (oil consumption, timing chain, .....), and the car has already 90K km, I asked myself why not transform the 1.4 into a 1.6 ?

The crank out of a 1.6FSi works in a 1.4TSi, but you need shorter rods. Problem: I can not find rods or pistons for my construction.

1) 1.4TSi (CAVE or CTHE)       76.5 x 75.6 , rod = 144mm, piston pin = 19mm,  good quality pistons 77.5mm = no problem

2) 1.6FSi (BAD,BAG,BLF,BLP) 76.5 x 86.9 , rod = 138                               17       ,  no TSi pistons available

 

What means that you can not make a TSi out of a FSi

So I need 138mm rods with SE of 19mm, or TSi pistons with 17mm pin.

 

As the Rod/Stroke is 1.905 for the 1.4 , and 1.590 for the 1.6 , I like to have TSi pistons a (at least) 1mm lower CH (pin higher) and 139mm (or longer) rods : 139/86.9=1.6 

Someone has done it or any suggestions ?

I did have a short look for other 139mm rods (eg guessing BMW E46) using MS https://www.ms-motorservice.com/en/ but they all appeared to have much larger big or little ends.

(I think CAVE has 50.56mm and 19mm width 20mm, 144mm long, and is of cracked construction  according to MS).

What about 1,2 mm less (138-136,8) for the compression ratio ? Of coarse the 1.4 rods (EA211) are 140mm, that's 2mm too much.

I really don't like short rods, I'm a little bit old fashion and the Rod/Stroke has to be more than 1.65 for me (140/86,9=1.611). As mentioned before (4 jan '23), the 1.4 EA111 the ratio is 1.905 and for the 1.6 it is only 1.588. With the 1.5 rod 136,8/86,9 = 1.574

I can't do anything about the Rod/Stroke ratio. I will experience it on myself is 1,574 ok or not. At now car is assembled and waiting for final software tune to check results on dyno.

 

If You are ready to try rods longer than 139 check VW 04E198401AB / 04E198401R / 04E198401S it's 139,8 and also should fits P&P in CAVD. I gave up on this idea because my tuner claimed they were too long (increased CR and risk of collision).

So Mobi, these are the "1.6TSi" results ? I have the same 213PS and 330Nm with only a sport air filter, Friedrich Motorsport exhaust and chip tuning. With 77mm pistons, a little bit "cleaning" at the head and proper SW optimization you will have 245-250PS.

May I give you a few examples: a Hyundai i20N (1.6 204PS/275Nm) after chip tune has 254PS/345Nm, an other example: the 1.6 EA111 was in the Fabia R2 (based on the 1.6MPi 105PS) in Evo trim up to 192PS. If projected to the CAVE/CTHE then we can dream of 380PS ...... Sorry I was lost in fantasy.

Yes, it's chart of 1.6 without any other hardware mods. Next step will be to improve the exhaust (and maybe inlet) flow. I won't try to push it above 300 HP. I think that due to the open deck design this engine won't last long at such loads, but maybe I'm wrong. IDK either the strength limit of stock 1.5TSI conrods I have used.

The most you gain is torque when going from 1.4 to 1.6. For the DSG it gives supplementary thoughts above 310Nm.

I'm running MT, so DSG problems don't concern me, however clutch is overheating at high load. With exhaust mod peak torque increased +10Nm, but I decided to cut it a bit to protect my stock clutch. IMHO current result it's limit for my turbo and exhaust manifold, if You think about bigger numbers, that's solution: click.

Hey you both, i know its been a year but im pretty interested in doing a Stroker on my 1.4TSI but i cant really make out what parts you ended up using.
Could you maybe list it for me?
