Bit of a weird one... I know the rev limit is around 6,000 RPM ish so I know I've got about that if I am doing an overtake or joining a motorway with a short slip road etc. I also know if I hit it by accident it will smooth out to basically no more power.

 

Joining a motorway today it got to about 5.25/5.5k ish RPM and basically cut out power completely. So a bit of bodge diagnostics I put it in neutral and revved it and it basically bounced between 5k/5.5k like some weird JDM rev limiter.

 

At this point I was sure I had finally blew it up but after turning off the ignition and restarting the car everything was entirely back to normal. No engine light, no codes, nothing. Only other symptom I've noticed is a very slight hesitation when plodding around town at low revs.

 

Just wondered if anyone else has ever had weirdness like this?

 

Disclaimer:

- I know that red-lining a 1.2 12v regularly is asking for huge trouble, probably. Its not done regularly not that this is relevant to the topic anyway.

- I know changing before 6,000k RPM is preferable for power since its fairly pants after 5.25k anyway.

I wonder if the engine vibration at those sorts of revs is exposing some sort of wiring/connection marginality?

Not sure how you'd go about tracking that down though. 

 

How long since spark plugs were looked at? 

Serviced everything last summer and it hasn't been that far... could easily be a coilpack breaking down though. It was just weird after restarting the car it stopped happening whereas before it was 100% reproducable. Feels like a sensor or ECU but no engine light.

 

Gonna just see if it does it again, was just curious if anyone else had it before
