I need new pads for my 1990 mk2, gsf seem to have a few listed and I was wondering if anyone knows which are correct. Mine is regd March 1990, so I was assuming it would be the ones up to 01/1990

These are the shape of the ones fitted on my 1L August 89 G plate Mk2 Breadvan, (Teves VW II Caliper?) and the last ones I fitted were Delphi LP505.

The VW part number for mine shows as  867698151,   which cross references with the Delphi LP505. The G40 seems to show a similar shape of pad, but a different VW part number and cross reference, probably due to the thicker disks fitted on those models. The ‘squarer’ pads with pins were on models pre 85,I think.

 

If yours are the same as mine then make sure you have the four pad fitting shims to go with them, they look like strips with a tab in the middle.You can re-use the existing ones if present and  ok.

theres early square pads for like 1984 only ...

 

all others that look like those in the pics 84 ish onwards

 

g40 same as 84 onwards but thinner to accomodate vented disc

 

try somewhere like avs car parts , give em the rego and they will sell you decent parts , not sure id want £5 brake pads on a car with already sh1t brakes

Are you still on solid discs, or have they been upgraded to vented?

 

I've been using ATE discs and pads lately and I've been really happy with them.

Still solid discs dude👍 I’ll maybe just do what suggested and try to get a better quality set through local motor factors. Roads were gritted this week so I’ll not have it out for a while.

Thing I'd ask myself is why not upgrade to vented while you're there? Discs and pads will probably cost the same, either way, but be less prone to warping, so it's just the cost of a pair of calipers. 

Just ordered pads and discs from local factors, I’m almost 💯 sure it still has the original discs at 110k. 

Driven carefully, expected lifespan

• pads about 60k miles
• discs 80k to 120k miles

 

I once got through a set of pads on a MK2 coupe between MOT's. 😁

Gently for the first 100 miles to reach full friction (especially with used rotor discs) then they last longer.

 

EBC Redstuff ceramic pads have a 300 mile bedding in period,

though not available for 239mm VWii caliper as far as I can tell. Also does not say whether they are Yeti proof.

 

 

I did actually bed them in, it's just how they were treated after that.

 

Fun fact, early MK2 girling/postage stamp brakes don't actually do anything if you try to use them at over 100mph. 

... and yet the postage stamps were standard fit on the 170km/h = 106mph GK engined Polos. Being Lhd they had a brake servo which helped, a bit.

 

Though would still fade on 2 lane Autobahn with a choice of back of the slow lorries or try to get in outside lane before the OPELGOLFBMWAUDIMERCPORSCHE convoy arrived. I learnt to hold back longer, move out early at 130km/h then keep accelerating waiting for the headlight double flash from behind, before beginning to move back in to a gap.

(I really miss German lane discipline, there's always someone faster behind so no one hogs outside or middle lane all bunched too close.)

 

VWii Vented (grooved) discs and Greenstuff pads were such an improvement, even for bendy UK B-roads at National speed limit.
