1W diesel engine timing

Featured Replies

Hello, i have a Polo Mk2fc with 1.4D engine (1W). I have trouble starting the car after the injection pump was removed.

Firstly, the car shut off whist my dad was driving and it had to be towed home. When i got home he told me the car was on while the key is in crank position. So i thought it must something wrong with ignition switch. After checking and testing it i realised it wasnt the problem. Because the car had a injection pump problem before we tought maybe that was the problem. But only after fully removing the pump, i found out the wire for the solenoid on the pump was disconnected (still dont know if this was the problem). Next day i installed the pump back into the car and timed it following the "So wirds gemacht" manual.

But still car wont start. I bleeded the air from the pump but still nothing. It was making a really bad noises when cranking. It sounds like the timing is really off. Does anyone know how to properly time my engine?

Here's a audio i recorded when cranking the car:

  • I assume you used flat bar and feeler blades in far end of camshaft (SWGemacht page 97), with piston 1 at TDC and a pin in pump wheel?   There's some diesel troubleshooting tables on page 10

There's some diesel troubleshooting tables on page 105-107 of SWGemacht.

including the worrisome pump mounting plate has rips, bolts loose and

injection plumbing not 1342.

I think the solenoid stops run-on (if that's what your dad described "car was on while the key is in crank position").

Start problem could be coincidental glow plug issue. If a glowplug tip has badly melted it might rattle around in the cylinder. Usually an injector fault in that cylinder.

There's also the dial test indicator method of checking the pump timing on page 101 using VAG special tool 2066. On a 1W the dial test indicator should read between 0.88 and 1.02mm.

(Fördebeginn der Einspritzpumpe)

This also mentions that the belt must be properly tensioned, especially on high mileage cars. If loose I suppose it would rattle. To me, recording just sounds like it needs fuel to ignite. So check the fuel filter (replace every 30,000km).

Note~ I don't have a 1W and I have only worked on 1.9TDI:

On TDI 0.5mm off TDC is enough to not start,so you might have reached a wear limit with the pump (pressure and port timing). Is it the original?
