Hello, can someone help me please, I'm a retired engineer but have no electric knowledge regarding car wiring, I recently drilled a hole for an accessory but like an idiot I didn't check where there were wires, long story short, I reconnected the wires that run along the bulkhead but now the car won't start, also the power steering light is on, I'm at a loss and really frantic as I'm disabled and need my car, can someone advise me with what could be wrong, I love my car being a petrol head but truly stuck with this problem

Oh dear.

 

Which model Polo?

Where did you drill the hole?

Did you disconnect the battery earth to chassis wire when you drilled the hole?

 

Car electric is nowadays 12v positive wires via fuse box to device, from device/sensor to chassis as negative (earth). Switches can be either side of device. On VW I've only found them on positive side.

 

You might be lucky to have just blown a fuse from a permanent or switched live wire to chassis due to conducting via drill bit.

 

Or you may have stripped insulation from wire behind hole.

Or cut through a wire completely.

 

If you have checked all the fuses unless you can see the damage, I think you need an auto electrician to diagnose and to fit new loom section.

 

Power steering broken wiring should not affect starting.

But might be a damaged circuit.

 

Does the engine turnover when you try to start?
