GT Camshaft Install

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have found a GT camshaft come up for sale with the code AF.

I was wondering what the difficulty would be to install this into my 1993 1.3 SPI polo.

Would this be a relatively simple weekend job for an average mechanic or not?

Thanks everyone.

Quite easy to snap them then is it? Just read through the thread you linked to (thanks btw) and it says they don't take any torque so only do them up till they have some resistance then stop real

Got it guys don't worry haha.

If you know how to change a cam belt and set timing, yes easy.

Watch out you don't break the 3x cam cover bolts when re-tightening.

I requested a quote from my mechanic to see what his price would be and he mentioned that I would need a new waterpump, new tensioner and coolant.

Is this necessary for the installation of the camshaft or has he said this so that what he has worked on is all new and won't go wrong in the future?

Thanks

the waterpump IS  the tensioner on a mk2f engine.

You could replace it while there.

Or just nip the 3 bolts around it tight to stop leak before working at the top, then loosen again to fit cambelt.

When was coolant last changed.

Ditto cambelt?

I would change cambelt, they are cheap, and it'd be a real shame if it shed teeth with new camshaft.

If there's any oil contamination you need to investigate.

and aux alternator belt, while there.

Holding cam pulley tight while undoing the bolt is a bit of a pain, but some bolts though a steel bar will stop it rotating.

Do you know about moving the pistons to half way up their bores?
