Hi, I was wondering if anybody knew how to change the fuel tank of a Polo Mk2 and whether I can do it myself or it’s too dangerous and should take it to a garage. My filler neck pipe has rotted due to dirt and water being kicked up by my rear driver side wheel and now there is petrol leaking. I’ve had a quote to get it changed by a garage which is about £500 but i’ve found the part for £100 on heritage and wanted to know if it’s possible to do it myself and how dangerous it is. 

You'll need the car up good and high on axle stands. Whether it's dangerous depends on how you do it and if you're used to jacking cars up and working underneath. If it's the first significant job you've done on a car by yourself, I'd probably suggest giving it a miss or getting someone who's done a bit more to help you through it. It might be worth showing the garage the price of a new genuine tank on Heritage and seeing if they'll work with you a bit, personally, I'm not a mechanic, and I could do one in a fairly unpleasant half a day laying on the floor without the benefit of a lift.
