Hi all.

On my 1.3 AAV 2F, my throttle pedal has always had some play in it. Recently the pedal has been sticking while accelerating and having to be pulled up by my foot. Now there is around an inch of play in the pedal.

I did some fettling around at the throttle body end of the cable and found it was slightly slack so did some adjustment and now the pedal isn’t sticking.

However, there is still around an inch of play in the pedal that I can lift up and down and it makes no difference to idle speed or speed when driving.

Question is: is this amount of play normal in a Polo or is my cable knackered?

frayed cable inner can make cable sticky. Might be on its way out.

 

On my mk2 I think the gas pedal should sit fractionally lower than brake pedal and have 5 to 10mm free play. And I reckon the pedal should move the cable at throttle end about 30mm from rest to fully down.

 

As you can pull pedal upwards more than 10mm I'd check out the brackets that the pedal rod moves in. The plastic bearings might have worn, or if driven with a seized/cooked cable the bracket support metal might have torn away from bulkhead (partially).

 

If you push it by hand does it move straight or diagonally?

I think you might be onto something with the pedal bracket bearings as the pedal does have some lateral play in it. I will have a look around for some as I don’t imagine they’ll be very expensive
