Hey folks, I need to split the back off of a Mk4 drivers seat. 

I have one seat with a solid back but a cigarette burn in the base and another seat with a back that feels spongy.

I'd like to swap the seat back from one to the other.

Is this straightforward - I can find loads of info about seat removal or seat cover repairs but not about actually splitting a seat back from the base (assume there is some wiring to navigate too.)

Or...

Thinking about it. perhaps it would be easier to swap the seat covers from one to the other?

What year car? 3 or 5 door?

Both 2006 gti, one is a 5 door, the other is a 3 (are the seats different)?
