Polo MK2 1989 - Pierburg 1B

Featured Replies

Hey guys.. So i have a Polo MK2 1989 with a Pierburg 1b carburator (Totally SHIT) and im having issues with it .. I replaced all the small bits using a new carb kit and still for some reason the car doesn't wanna idle .. I also replaced the flange 2 times cause they're SHIT too.. Now im stuck and was wondering can be done to solve this.. I saw many threads were they just convert to a webber carb but i dont know which parts i need to purchase for the whole conversion.

looking forward to your answers! thx all 🙂

Are you sure there's not an vacuum leak downstream of caburettor butterfly valve?
Inlet manifold gasket or any vacuum pipes (cloth braid covered) might be suspect.

if you can hold smallest fast idle by bracing the pedal say,

use Cold start spray around carb base and manifold...

If it speeds up more there's your leak.

If you are running with E10 petrol it'll need more fuel.

Even E5 needs a bit more.

If you want to convert a 1.1 litre from Pierburg 1B3 to Weber, you need to choose which Weber.

  • 32 TLM (manual choke)
  • 32 TLA (auto choke)
  • 34 ICH

and go from there.

Those are all single choke. You might be able to use a twin choke 28/30DMTR but that needs a different inlet manifold.

1B3 has an idle stabilisation valve on the bulkhead. It's a 2 way valve controlled by an electric wire.

I once helped with a TLM conversion not using the idle stability and the engine tended to hunt (wavering idle speed) despite very careful set-up. I suspect the flywheel is too light for this engine.

TLM and TLA use the same mounting flange.

The holes are rotated from the Pierburg's.

I think VW part number

030129765C

TLM will need a choke cable.

TLA will need plumbing for the autochoke. I guess reuse the 1b3's plumbing. Otherwise 2x T-pieces (19mm with 16mm tap?) in the coolant hose and tubing to bring hot coolant to the autochoke and back (I think parallel to car heater might be simplest) and all the jubilee clips for that.

Top of these carb is the same for air fiter.

New ethanol safe fuel lines (SAE J30 R9) and clips.

(the old rubber lines are hard, brittle).

I expect 5.6mm internal diameter for 6mm barbs.

New inline fuel filter.

New air filter.

Base of the carb vacuum hoses to distributor for ignition advance and air inlet hot air flap control valve.

And if the donor car or intended fitment is different (like a 987cc Fiesta) ideally some slight adjustment to jets used, say plus 3-6%ish surface area increase for E5 ethanol petrol after you get it running.

Don't know anyone who has fitted an ICH, will need a custom carb flange I guess.
