Hi!

 

First off, I'm pretty new to wrenching on cars overall.

 

My polo mk2 coupé, a 1988 model with the 1.3l 55bhp engine and catalytic converter, has some issues starting. I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump located in the tank which seems to receive only 10 volts and causes it not to prime at all. Most of the time, the pump doesn't prime as I'm turning the key to ignition and the car won't start at all. Sometimes the pump (very rarely) does prime but usually won't start anyways. The battery in the car is brand new and the pump works fine when I test it with an external 12V battery. I've replaced the fuse, but can't locate the fuel pump relay. I have the Haynes manual but it doesn't provide that good of a description for my particular model. I have no fuel pressure, which is not that surprising.

 

Feels like I wan't to replace/test the fuel pump relay but I don't know the location of it, or is it something else that I could be doing/test as well?

The 4pin relay above fuses in plenum chamber under bonnet back of engine bay left hand side.

Thanks! I've checked these two relays and they seem to be working fine. When I measure voltage in the relay- or fuse socket, I measure a steady 12v. Weird thing is that when I pull the relay or fuse, I still measure 10v at the pump which shouldn't be possible? Since I've not been able to determine which relay goes to the pump (since I still get 10v at the pump when either of the relays under the bonnet are pulled), I've tried swapping places of the relays since they seem identical and this hasn't yielded any positive results either. I'm pretty clueless what next step to take, suggestions anyone?
