6n TBA / idle / VCDS

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I have a 6n 16v AFH on a 99 plate and have some idling issues. Sometimes the revs get stuck at 2k rpm, sometimes the revs will hang on the way down at 1.5k then slowly return to 1k and other times I have no issues at all. I’ve also noticed that when moving it judders at 1.5k rpm (where it’ll usually hang) as if it’s going to stall (again, moving in say 2nd gear).

I finally managed to get VCDS and plugged it in to complete a throttle body adaption, which found the vehicle fine. Although it was coming up as KW-1281, which upon searching the ross-tech forum is for cars 2001 onwards. I tried the following:

  • Select]

  • [01 - Engine]

  • [Basic Settings - 04]

Enter Group 060

I also tried various other groups (004, 098 etc) but couldn’t find the adpt run option? The closest I found was throttle body angle but couldn’t do anything with that?

Is this maybe the software is too modern? Could it be that my ECU has been changed to a newer unit?

Thanks in advance for any info

James

Hello,

Did you tried group 001 which is on the 6n1 für the magneti marelli ecus (8V AEE and 16V AFH, 098 all others petrol) as far as i know.

On my AEE i do that every year after cleaning the throttle body and reconnect while the service.

What milage is your afh?

can also be s sign for for a soon death of your throttle body.

when i was over in ireland 2022 to do the wild atlantic way my 225000 km aee sometimes was running bumby in neutral..... after that i was three weeks in the uk and heading down the M3 it suddenly happened.... car broke down.... neutral ideling at about 500 revs....

i managed it somehow to get to the dorset folksfest and on the next day the nice Chris from the AA came and found out that the trottle body has issues in neutral..... he tightened the wire from the gaspedal so that the engine stays alive without pushing the gaspedal..... enough to get home a week later.

at home i spend the first time in my life time for the throttle body. there is a ssp (self study program) for the 6n tb and several diy how to repair and change that tiny 12v motor inside the tb to react to the orders from the ecu....... its brushed were used and so a new motor was needed.

lol now i am on a 9weeks tour through scottland and i have my original repaired + a spare one with me, which also has a new motor and neutral-switch.... boot full with spareparts..... you never know.

will see if i have that ssp on my motebook with me and if so, i try to upload it here .... but only in german language....

cheers

lol simple question.... did you ever cleaned the throttle body? there where it opens and closes? thats also a common prob that its just dirty and the flap cannot move easily....

???

cheers

Hi mate,

Thanks for the reply.

The mileage is on 107k. The old owner changed the throttle body due to it idling a little rough when cold. Upon this, the new throttle body caused it to hunt quite badly and therefore he put the old one back on. I think as he's removed / tampered with the TB, it needs the adaption (reset) via vagcom / VCDS.

Just found it a little strange how there were no options to reset this and some of the groups which it should've been under kept saying "no units" under each section.

I'm fitting new HT leads in hope it resolves the issue and that it's not actually throttle body related!

Thanks

James
