Pay As You Drive Insurance

Featured Replies

If you drive your car between 11pm & 6am regulary, then there is no point in you reading any further...

but for the people that generally just drive during the day or have low milage, this could be the answer for cheap car insurance.

Pay as you Drive is with Norwich Union & Basically they fit a tracker in your car, then you pay per mile you drive, at the end of each month you get an itemised bill, to show where you have been, how long you took and how much it cost.

I currently pay 4p per mile with my first 100 miles a month free

then £1 a mile if i drive between 11pm & 6am which luckaly for me i very rarely do.

Now there are lots of pros and cons to this which you just have to sit and weigh up. for some people this is a good thing for others it wouldnt be worth it. and there is an issue of privacy here too seen as they know where you are at all times.

I got the policy in October 2005 so have just completed my first year ont he Pay As You Drive, and it was a lot ebtter than i thought and i was only paying around £20 a month insurance. so that has worked out at £240 for the year. (my quotes for fully comp insurance in October 2005 were £800) so this is a considrable difference.

Looking again this year as my insurance runs out on the 11th october, the Pay As You Drive tracker systems have now been upgraded so you get use of Sat Nav, Speed Camera Detection and also a button in you car that connects you directly to the police / insurance company & break down company if you were to ever need it.

Just contacted Norwich union about the new PAYD policy and they are going to upgrade me for free, give me an extra discount because i have another years no claims, and £50 of high street vouchers if i stay with them. looking at fully comp years policy will cost me about £550 with a normal insurance company. so its definatly worht me staying on the PAYD.

for me this is great also because i have added my partner on to my policy for no extra cost, still just pay per mile.

Also with me currently looking for a Polo GT i checked with the insurance company that they would still inusre me and fit a new tracker to the new car at no extra cost which they do! which will be great, just gotta find the right Polo now!

now this is all good for me but from another point of view its like i have succumbed to the ultimate big brother and are now part of an experiement which will see every motorist in the country forced to fit a tracker to their car which will allow the authorities to see exactly where they go, when they go, how fast they drive, etc, etc, etc.

Just wondering any one elses views on this or if anyone else has tried it or thinking of trying it? or weather you agree that its just an invasion of privacy!

I dunno. I mean I drive around 30000-35000 miles a year

with two cars,

one is a group 3 £180 a year unlimited mileage and will probably get at least 25,000 miles on it.

the other is a track car and only really driven to the track and back or for a bit of fun. my insurance company doesnt cover me for use on the track anyway so if you're just driving around in circles would they charge you for something they dont cover?

not for me i guess.

its a mad idea for sure!! Sounds like it would work out cheaper too!

What about if you want insurance for a car that doesn't go very far! At the mo my GT is off the road and isn't very likely to do alot of miles at all, so how would this work out for me?

You only pay for the miles you drive, so very cheap i would imagine!

they work out the Pence per mile dependant on your age and your car and usual details.

For anyone that is interested, here is the link to the PAYD site to get a quote.

just bin on, went through the rigmarole of filling in forms... come back later... friggin typical!!

Just got a quote £3400, hmmm no thanks

Totally against the idea. The bigbrother society is upon us, we cant eat, shit or breathe without someone somewhere knowing where we are! Our privacy has been taken over. Not that i have anything to hide because i haven't, just that i hate the idea that someone is watching, knowing where i am. Its kinda freaky. They hide behind the cheapness but really its cost you your privacy. The next time your alone on the motorway in the wee hours, humming along to yourself, enjoying the open road and the emptyness - someone knows you are there!

Yeah, absolutely true... as if we aint watched enough... :ninja:

THE TRUEMAN SHOW springs to mind. Also the government has succeeded in keeping the amount of traffic down by duping the consumer into cheapness if you stay off the roads less. The pedal pushers are slowly winning. Soon we will be run by vegetarian, bushy haired, biking enthusiasts armed with bigbrother style cameras.

I am not sure to be honest, it is designed for young drivers so i assume so.

maybe you should try doing a quote?

you do need to be able to set up a direct debit to pay monthly so i would check that with your bank too!

they record your speed.... so if say you do speeding then wont they charge you extra as your more of a risk... even though you could be going around a track

also is that valid on the track because your paying for the insurance while your on there

the advantage of this is if you have an accident they will know everything about the accident depending on how often the system is updated

Very Vaild point, they must record your speed as on your monthly bill it will say for example...

27/06/2006 20.08 Westfield Grove 20.11 Barratts Road 1.2 Miles

So they no that on that occasion i drove 1.2 miles in 3 minutes.

this is my second year on PAYD now, and they have never quiried my speed. then again i have never had to claim (touch wood)

Thats fair enough, obviously we have a difference of opinion, but personally i couldnt put a price on my own privacy. I wouldnt like the idea of being spied on.

It'd probably cost me that a month. £1 a mile? A bloody taxi would be cheaper.
