man i nearly got bloody arrested for having wide wheels at back!

police stop me...look at my back wheels an go 'mate, your back wheels are sticking out of the arch, i could give you 6 points for that' an i was like wtf obviously not getting cocky or anything cos i knew that'd cause more shit. so i politely stated 'no officer, i've read up on this an you can see my tyres are slightly stretched, keeping the tread inside the arch, thus being legal'...at which point he went mental! 'LOOK AT THIS BADGE, IT SAYS POLICE, I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING, DONT GET COCKY WITH ME OR I'LL ARREST YOU'... an i go 'sorry officer i'm just stating some simple facts to save me getting prosecuted'... an the knobbo left me with a 30 quid fine!

was i right in saying that if the treads in the arch its legal? cos i really want to take this to court an show the idiot up...if i'm wrong then i'm gutted lol but please help people! thanks

You could report the copper for abusive behaviour, but you'd have to keep your nose very clean, as coppers have a thing about catching people who report them.

An MOT station is not the law. Find a copy of the constrution and use regulations. I don't think you'll win the argument though as I believe the rotating assembly has to be 'safe' which means that the whole lot has to be covered by the bodywork of the car.

If I get any sort of backchat when I'm on duty, they'll be getting a mouthful from me. My advice is just plead ignorance. They must have been fairly bored, where I am, we dont have enough time to pick on boy racers with big wheels and loud exhausts (as much as I'd want to of course)...

An mot with the wheels fitted would constitute road legality, therefore you would be able to fight it in my opinion.

They couldnt give me a producer or anything cos i keep my licence, MOT, and insurance certificate in my glovebox, the idiot made me late for my lesson aswel, so i missed quite an important part of organic chemistry! gays :(

yeah they might not be able to give you a producer, but they can give you a defective vehicle report, or if they think its too dangerous they can have it impounded and towed away.

Jez got buggered for the same thing right before BVF and had to have an MOT retake.

From all the threads I've seen in the past, the general consensous is that, strictly, there is no law against having wheels that stick out.... so long as your tyres are stretched meaning the tread is arch covered. However most of the time it is regarded as dangerous by the law and people end up with fines/defective vehicle reports.

and by a concensus of opinion and looking at the SVA manual, if the wheels stick out of the arches they are illegal.

my bro used to work in an MOT garage and he said that aslong as the tread is covered by the arch its legal so streatched tyres are ok aslong as the arch covers the tread

Jez's was for the tyres fouling the arches (i.e. scrubbing) which you can't really argue with. MOT failure and pretty dangerous.

It depends on how the law is interprited, there is no yes or no here from what research I have done. And people will know it was quite alot.

The Mot says its fine the construction and use act is a big grey area.

If it went to court I reckon it would be up to the judges discretion as to whether it is illegal.

The law states something like the TYRE has to be suitably coverd so as not to cause excessive spray which could cause hazardous driving conditions for other road users, i.e ensuring you have stretched tyres so you dont spray crap everywhere.

you can refuse producers now anyway on the grounds that the number plate can tell the police anything they need to know and a producer is only given to cause inconvienece because they cant do you for anything else (in my experience)

thats not true, because you still need to prove who you are to the police, so you would at least need to carry your driving liscence with you. A producer is not just about checking that the car is legit, its also about checking that the driver is legit too.

He may be a moody police officer but you're a car enthusiast which has read up about wheels sticking out. He probably has a vague idea about most laws but probably isnt keyed up on cars completley. Arrogant barstewards.

Police Officers can be pretty gay, the last time I was pulled was for a routine check, 1 gay officer, 1 that didn't say anything.

I was asked by one of the officers what the car was. I had to show him then engine to prove it wasn't an RS Turbo.

He said my alloys weren't decleared and I would have to pay an on the spot fine..... so I removed the wheel trim, I was called a cocky one.

He mentioned something about my sound equipment, all of two speakers and a radio cassette player LOL.

All this whilst the other officer was standing behind the car shaking his head. They left me in the end to take up an urgent call, the german number plates and large white D sign were totally ignored.

My advice, from a Police Officers standpoint, is:

1) Shut your face. The last thing you want to do is give lip to a cop. So I would not recommend telling an officer to "come down off his power trip!"

2) DO NOT refuse a producer, it will only land you in more bother than its worth. Yes, we can tell a lot from vehicle checks, but we cannot check everything.

Please bear in mind, we are human too, and some of us (in fact, most of us in my experience) are nice people when we are spoken to in a civil manner.
