insurance: declaring mods

Featured Replies

Hi! just loooking for a bit of advice please!

I have made a few changes to my mk2 parade and was wondering whether it is worth telling the insurance company whether I have done so :ninja: ?? They are just things such as a coupe S grill, coupe S clocks and a better (but still standard) interior. I dnt yet have an insurance policy for this car and havnt took my test yet so i have no NCB or out!

Cheers!

yeeeeeeesssss! :-D

cant afford to have HIGHER insurance quotes! :disgust:

although you will probably be ok not declaring those mods, any change from standard should be declared. if the car looks better than it did originally then it may make it more desireable to steal.

if you declare the mods and say its just from a different model it probably wont cost you anything anyway.

right cheers!

replacement chrome badges i spose will be the same sort of thing then?! I reckon its pretty pathetic that insurance is gona cost 4x the car cost in the first place! :puke:

MOST of the time you can get away with using OEM parts, i know sombody who phoned up to declare wheels on his fiesta but was running escort alloys and they said there was not really any need to declare them

not sure if this goes with all insurance companies though

best to phone up your insurance company and say you are 'thinking about' doing these things and wether itll change your premium. it shouldnt, but if it does at all you can decide wether its affordable or whether you 'are not' going to do them

ill bear that in mind cheers 4 the help people!!

It's always best to mention everything.

Most reputible insurance compnies keep a recording of all calls, so in the event of the claim they will have proof that you declared everything and pay out.

Remember, insurance compnies are there to make profit for shareholders, so will avoid paying out if possible.

^ even if your insurance is 100% correct they will still try and get out of it some how so your insurance being invalid is just asking for them to not pay out.

lol  My uncle had a sierra when he was about 20 and put touring suspension on. A lorry went into the bak of him before he declared the changes and him and his mate had to spend the night changing it back! I want to avoid anything like this as changing the front grill back after a crash might not be all to easy if the front end was rekd!

Would there be any point declaring things such as eyebrows that can easily be removed? I will check out all prices before making major changes as some quotes with the car as standard are sickening :puke:

Cheers again for comments!

Didn't know an S grill was any different?

So long as the interior isn't a sporty job (if the standard one wasn't), I wouldn't worry at all.

As for the clocks, I doubt an assessor would spot it unless he really knows his stuff. If he did, I'd plead ignorance and just say they were in when I bought it.

ohh and dont forget that this "changing things back to standard" thing isnt waht it used to be, as loads of people have mobile phones with cameras in, so will take pictures in the event of a crash... so you're insurance company gets a picture of your modified car from the other parties involved, and the assessor takes some pictures or a standard car.....

...now its not that hard to spot that there is an insurance fiddle going on when both sets of pictures are seen together.

lol yea i see what you mean! I'm not planning to crash  but i reckon ill just play it safe anyway. Cant really afford to take the risk. But then again I cant afford not to, robbin *!(^$$& £$@% &$£^ insurance companies!

i wouldnt worry about any of the things youve mentioned and i wouldnt bother changing them back either if i did have a crash. the main thing is if the car is highly modified or clearly faster then it should be with engine goodies. i cant imagine an insurance company givin a fuck about your grill. things like lowering springs i woulnt be too arsed abou that either uless its scrapping its arse on the deck.

The colour coded de-locked handles I've been working on will soon be ready, and I'm gonna have to phone the insurance company to enquire about this and the remote locking system and the delocked handles. I'm going to be mightily cheesed if they are going to charge me loads extra for making my car MORE secure. In fact I'll probably not fit them until the end of the policy and then switch to someone with a more sensible policy about mods if they're at all funny about it.
