i say a brand new m3 the other day with them, do they ahve to be yellow and white?

yep fraid so mate have to be standard font, only allowed GB or EU flag on the side, have to be E marked and have to have the manufacturers postcode on the for them to be prefectly legit

if i could get hold of a pre '73 licence number and transfered it to my car, would that be legal?

What about if the car was a Q plate ?

It's probably still no, LOL.

Catagorically no.

Q-plating came in in the 80's IIRC. Therefore the vehicle would have been registerred after then. Q-plates are always white/yellow and none-transferable - which is a shame, as I have Q180 OST (Q1 BOOST) on my truck.
