My coupe s just failed its MOT 2day on 1 Handbrake ratchet mechanism, 2 rear brake pipe corroded, 3 horn not working,4 Outer CV boot

When i went round there found that the horn does work but just have to mush hard on the steering wheel.

The bloke in the garage said that i will need the whole mecanism best get 1 from the breakers, cant i just get the ratchet part bolted to the instde of the car?

CV boots not hard to do just messy.

And the break pipe corroded.

Oh and an MOT costs just over £50 now what a rip off goverment just put it up other day, Another means to getting the older cars off the road.

over £50? mine was only £38.50, still rather high though!

you need to check which part of the rear brake pipe it is, if your lucky its only the short bit between the brake cylinder and the flexi pipe, otherwise it means replacing the whole length under the car and onto master cylinder in engine bay. my garage would charge £40 an hour labour for that and would take them at least two hours, plus fluid and parts etc. I brought a reel of pipe from a local motorfactors or you can get the soft copper stuff on e-bay, 25ft is enough for both pipes, I took the old pipes off and got the garage to cut new pipe to length and put the ends on as i dont have a brake flairing tool, then put it on myself, can give you more tips if you need, although hopefully you just need to replace the short bits which is way easier!, of you dont fancy that it wouldnt be horrendously expensive for garage to do.

Not sure about the handbrake mechanism but dont forget it changed from early to later mk2's so make sure you get the right bit.

again CV boot isnt that hard, but not that expensive for garage to do. i got 10 working days to get mine back for free retest, they said just dont do too many miles or they might get funny.

certainly doesnt sound like its the end of this particular 'old' car
