Featured Replies

I just bought a set of these for my polo gt, which has standard steels on at the mo. the alloys are early vw golf gti 16v wheels.

I've heard that because they are vw alloys they wont cost me any extra. am I right?

also thinking of a 60mm drop is that going to be a big increase?

any help apreciated :finger:

Haha, no. Most (all?) insurers would make a fuss if you had factory-optional alloys on the car and didn't declare them.

Looking at how modifications affect a premium on Bell's site is probably a good indication for most 'reasonable' car insurers would look at it -- I get ~10% extra from non-optional alloys, and ~6% for up to a 5cm drop.

I will declare my wheels on my insurance. I was hoping that my insurance company wont sting me too much with premiums after I've put the wheels on and dropped the car 60mm. its gotta be done cant have the car floating around like a boat at standard ride height any more. cheers for the info :finger:

Hang on a minute - the alloys on my mk4 16v are the optional 15" solitudes, rather than the standard 14" indianapolis wheels - does that mean I need to declare tham, even though they've been on the car since it rolled out of the factory?

Ring up and check. My sister got a lot of trouble with her insurance company really making a fuss about the optional alloys on her mx5, and it's really not worth the hassle.

Of course, it really does depend on the company.

ok so i just phoned my insurance company and they wont touch me if I modify my car in any way, I guess that is what you get for three years loyal custom.

instead I decided to phone adrian flux who would insure and the quote was also about a hundred pounds cheaper a year, ok so I sound like an ad for them but the point is insurance companys suck

a suspension drop on my old golf mk3 of more that 20mms increased my premium by 196 quid

As TNC said, it really does depend on the insurance company.

I phoned up my insurers not so long ago about the same subject and got the following info.

Alloy wheels will add 10% to the premium

Alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts will cost only £20 for the administration charge, nothing added to premium

Lowering my car would not even be considered!
