Re-registering

Featured Replies

If I transplant a GT lump into the CL then re-register it as having a GT engine, will it come up as a GT conversion or just a GT on the insurance number plate search thingy?

No-one know? I just don't fancy getting a bumming from the insurance companies if it come up as a conversion

It comes up as a CL regardless, but the engine code on your V5 will read as GT

does it cost a lot more to insure a conversion then? if so how come?

i can see me getting ass raped, and not in a good way either :-(

here's a hint.

Don't bother.

conversions cost too much.

jus call any insurer.. not you are own... and ask

different insurance companies treat it differently. Normal ones like Tesco, Direct Line, etc... usually run a mile as soon as you start talking about engine conversions. But decent insurance companies like Brentacre, Adrian Flux quite often treat it as if it was the car you've put the engine in from. As long as you've also converted any things like brakes and suspension too.

So even though it's registered as a GT it'll come up as a 1043 CL? :?

I would, but a lot of places like that require you to be 19+ HIC for instance...

No, on the V5 it will read Polo CL

The engine number and displacement will be the only things that will change for you, as your CC will now be 1272cc and the engine number will now start 3F****** as opposed to AAU******. It is only through the engine number that it will be recognised as a 'GT' as the model designation will not change, so when checking your registration on the DVLA/RAC websites, insurance databases, etc your car will still come up as Polo CL.

HTH.

Karl.

It is technically possible to get the model name changed from CL to GT on the V5. Apparently it happens a fair bit in the Mini tuning world (although I can't even remember who it was who told me that so don't quote me!). There is info about it on the DVLA website. By the looks of it the car would have to be totally stock GT specification and as I read it you might have to get a letter from VW authorising the change! Just have a read on the DVLA website.

Personally I reckon it'd be easier to keep phoning round different insurance companies till you find one who is reasonable.

You may be better off just buying a GT or waiting till you're older and have some NCB.

HIC

all will insure as a polo GT - job done! :)

and yes, your engine code will be changed but thats about it.

How I read all that - it will come up as a "polo CL 1.3 MPi" and NOT "Polo GT 1.3"

is that basically it or have I got it bass ackwards?

I check with my insurance company (ensign through adrian flux) for an NZ > G40 conversion and it's cheaper than my g40 was. only £260 instead of £320 and allows mods up to 50% power increase from the engine so around 170bhp? or maybe I'm just getting cheaper to insure.

Yes that is correct.

I have a Gt'd genesis. Brentacre treat it as a GT for insurance.

Don't use HIC as your brokers, or highway as underwriters as they are shite insurers. Back in the day myself and several club members had problems with claims, so they were removed from the preferred insurers list!

Nearly.

If you look at your current V5C it will say Polo CL. That will remain as is.

The cc will change from 1043cc to 1272cc. You change this using the box to the right hand side of the current vehicle details.

The engine number will currently be AAU******. This will change (again using the box to the right hand side of the current details on the V5C) to start 3F and the new engine number.

It will not state anything about being MPi, just that the displacement has changed.

When insurers look the vehicle up according to registration, it will still come up as a Polo CL. When they ask has the vehicle been modified in anyway, this is the point you state the engine conversion has been done. As stated above with the specialist modified insurers they will then for the sake of insurance treat the car as if it was a Polo GT when it left the factory. It is also at this point that some mainstream insurers run!

Even my Mk2 with a GT conversion, Brentacre are insuring it as a 'normal' GT rather than a conversion
