Easiest way to make your seatbelts run right? Pull them all the way out and hoover them.

It really works.

I always thought that if you pulled them too far out they wont go back at all, so been scared to pull them out more than necessary! think you're onto something tho as they do collect a bit of fluff. also like me you probably have the early polo specific ones so need to look after them as that beats trying to find another set!

Does this work with mk4 ones as well? Always been a bit cautious about fiddling with them because they've got the explosive charges (?) in them to make them tighten in an accident.

did the abags go off cos the charges are linked to the airbag ecu the charges aretimed to go off a split seccond before the airbags.

Works for all cars. You don't need to do any spannering, just pull the belt out as if you were putting it on, and keep pulling til you run out. Stick a clothespeg on it to stop it rolling back, and give it a hoover.

I've never had a car explode becasue I was putting the seatbelt on.

no the pretensioners arnt actually in the seat belt part. they are in the bit the seat belts clip into down the side of the seat near the hand break... they will only retract about an inch anyway if they were to go off in an accident. sometimes you wont even know if they have gone off till you take them off and out and you will then see they are crinckled up. if yours are going slow on your mk 4 give it a go!has to be said it is definately one of the most annoying things ever...especially when you close your door...look back and its reopened because the poxy seatbelt was in the way.lol

or use some siliconespray that you use for veleting its called cheery slick lemon slick etc you get the drift make the dash shiney etc

I now make a point of pulling out and vacuuming my belts every time I clean the car! Great idea!

silicon spray does the trick, but don't use the belt until its totally dry,esp with a white shirt!!

Mine need me to put the belt straight and help it, I always kick in into the back and by the time I return its almost retracted!

I had the same seatbelt problem in my valver and a simple hoover up didn't work. So after further invertigation I've found what the problem was and made a proper guide so that others can try it out as well. Here it is:

Well, after my seatbelts got so slow that I thought I'd fail my MOT because of them, I thought I better sort them out.

Basically by doing the following I managed to reduce the time it takes my seatbelt to completely wind up from 1.5 minutes to 1.5 seconds!!!

Firstly, pull on the back part of the seatbelt as shown in the photo and let go. If it winds back up straight away, this guide is for you. But if the back part doesn't wind up, then your actual seatbelt recoil mechanism is fooked and I cant help you with that:

These are the tools I used during my "restoration",lol:

white spirit, surface polish (slippery when dry), lighter, scalpel, cotton ear buds and a little clamp.

Firstly pull out all of the seatbelt (as you would if you were a really fat person trying to buckle up), and attach the clamp at the end to stop it from winding up. Now hoover up the belt. Next take your lighter and singe off any fraying (spelling)

Next, take off the cover from the seatbelt hinge thingy. Pull the belt to one side and you should see a build up of crap at the point where the scalpel is pointing. So gently scrape it off. Do the same with the belt pushed to the other side:

Once most of the crap has been scrapped off, take your cotton ear bud and dip in in some white spirit. Now wipe all over the area where the belt makes contact and then wait for it to dry. Lastly wipe the area with furniture polish of your choice. The ones that are very slippery when dry are the best (sometimes they say on the bottle "do not use on steering wheel").

HOPEFULLY, your seatbelt should now wind up quicker then you can say "holly sh*t"

i took the belt out fo the car and gave it a good hoover and wipe down with soapy water and let it dry while still stretched out, then some pledge spray on the plastic sliders

slides back like a good un now :)
