Does this work with mk4 ones as well? Always been a bit cautious about fiddling with them because they've got the explosive charges (?) in them to make them tighten in an accident.

There is a heavy ball which sits in a cup type arrangement. When the ball comes out of the cup it locks the seatbelt into position, like in an accident and keeps it tensioned. This is also what happens sometimes when you pull a seatbelt and it gets stuck whilst you're putting it on, it's because the ball has become unseated. Newer cars also use sensors linked to the airbag system which use a pneumatic system to tension the seatbelt and keep the occupant seated. It is self adjusting to the user in the seatand gets tighter the more the occupant moves. These are called inertia belts. This is what some people refer to as the explosive system, but it only works on the pre-tensionisers, the gas expands so fast that it is effictively 'exploding'.
