What would you do?

Featured Replies

OK am considering ordering my new wheels this week, however before i fit them i will dropping my car by 60mm front and back. I had a word with my insurance company back in january and they said the wheels won't add anything to the premium, however lowering the car will add another £1000!!!

I was thinking about switching insurance companies, but that would effect my no claims as i will gain 1 year in july.

So by the looks of things, am pretty much screwed, i would really like to carry out these mods but this insurance business is just plain bullshit.

Alot of people have said "just don't declare", however the last thing i want is for my insurance company to void my policy when i actually need them!

What would you do?

Thanks

No, you couldn't.

1000 pounds for adding alloys to your car?? your bein abused having to pay that additional premium!

jesus! crackwack.gif

what company are you with!?

factory alloys may be a good solution until july as they are simply an optional extra with the car and wont affect the premium i would have thought!

@tris! i love brentacre! :D

Adding alloys is free, however lowering adds the additional £1000.

Some advice folks, do NOT go with swinton car insurance, you can't so much as clean your car without getting raped by their prices!

I have some minor modifications such as debadged grill, clear indicators, mk5 rear lights which are not declared, hate to see what they say if i tell them about those, however minor they may be!

why will you lose your ncb if you change companies???

I'm sure thats not the case coz at the end of the day, you've been insured without claim for a year. so regardless of you changing insurers that 1 YEAR NO CLAIM BONUS should be transferable...

and if its not then theres a problem there coz i've never heard of it and so there obviously trying to make you stay with them (and imo, tell them where to stick it and go elsewhere)

I've been down the "don't declare it" route I'm ashamed to say.

Problem is - you're always worried about the "what if" factor.

Now I'm fully declared for mods I never even had to bother thinking about it.

If you can hold out and do other minor bits and bobs - go for it. Unfortunately, in the event of an accident, if your insurers REALLY wanted to, they could do you just for having a debadged grille that you didn't tell them about. You have technically managed to void your insurance by fitting non standard items to the car. Even cosmetic bits and bobs COULD screw you over. This said, some insurers don't mind too much about those bits.

Been here - done this. It's a royal pain in the arse.

i'd change insurers! £1000 for lowering your car????? They must be bloody living in cuckoo land! My insurance comapny dont care bout my wheels strangely (used to work in insurance - claims side!) but thats all i told them about!

I'd wait 'til your 1 year NCB mate

Then change companies

I'm wioth flexibell, 18 on a provisional. They wanted another £160 for alloys and -40mm lowering.

I'm just gona wait til december this year (if i can!), get a specialist company eg HIC to insure me with 1yr NCB for about £800 in total.

Far better way to do it.

Adrian Flux didnt want to know about the 70/60 lowering on my polo, but did want to know about the alloys. Also, nothing about any of the minor external changes I've made such as light tinting and chequers on the boot.

Another vote for brentacre!

I'd wait 'til your 1 year NCB mate

Then change companies

I'd have to agree with that.
