Well, you probably know i've got a tempremental G40 which has huge amounts of time off the road for 1 reason or another. well this is my daily drive / commuter / family car.

Its a 1991 Mk2 Golf GTD (bought with 103,000 miles on for £1200 in November 2005) The mileage is now at 134,000 miles.

Here's the spec and some pics of it!

Engine: 1.6 TD (SB) engine with factory fitted Intercooler setup - Loads of mods! Jetex panel filter in de-restricted airbox, Blow off valve disabled, wastegate adjusted (+2 turns on the thread), recirculator disabled, fuel pump modified, tuning pin fitted - Power estimated at 110bhp for less than an hours work!

Suspension: Bilstein gas shocks and Eibach Go-Lo springs (55mm)

Brakes: Std fitment, but there are VWII's there so upgrading to vented discs and gti pads soon!

Wheels and tyres: Currently on G60 steels with 195/50/15 Toyo T1-R's - to be replaced with D90's with colour coded centres!

Exterior: Almost stock other than big bumpers - bodykit being replace with full 90-spec GTi kit along with new bumpers, upgraded headlight loom with 130W inner and outer bulbs!

Interior: G60 LHD interior - electric front (rear to be fitted) windows, sunrof (just sourced an electric setup and loom), vortex centre console, arm rest, VDO gauges fitted into stereo slot

ICE/Security: Sony Xpolo MP3/CD headunit - rest is std, but have plans for DVD headunit and upgraded speakers!

Comments: 55mpg is easy in this thing - cruise at 90 all day without missing a beat.

Just had over £700 worth of work done on it inc a new oil cooler, new alternator, new starter motor, repaired alternator loom, new clutch, 2 new Toyo's . Its only needed oil changes upto this work being done!

I hope to keep this car for a long time yet - there are a few marks in the paint and some small patches of rust coming through, plus i was clipped by a taxi which caused a bit of damage, but hopefully that will all get sorted out this summer! :)

Golf is rather tidy Should look really mint with the D90s!

Yeah the G40 is mega tempramental! 3 rebuilds of the original charger in 30,000 miles - last time it was knackered, new charger and already been rebuilt once. along with new oil pump - which is what caused the problems!

Yes the G40 and trailer is real! Just wait until the Polo show! :)

Looks ace on the G60's but can't wait to see it on D90's!!

Well its time to get started on the GTD! Another 2 weeks off sick - so got to do something to keep me from going insane!

What's a GTD like to drive? I've heard mega good reviews about the performance of them (quickest diesel of the time or something) but never read anything about the handling... Does it feel nose heavy?

Now that the boost is turned up and the fueling sorted then its pretty lively on boost (2000rpm+) the handling is spot on - normally quick enough to shake the motorbikes on the way to work! But it does have Eibach springs and Bilstein gas shocks so handling is well sorted!

It sometimes runs better than others and can be a shit to start! But i'm quite attached to it!

Here is what i've got planned:

remove older spec body kit

remove big bumpers

repair drivers side wing

fix the usual MK2 golf rust spots - rearpanel seams, smooth the rear panel (no badges)

Things to be colour coded - wingmirrors, door handles (chinese style - like mk4 polo ones) grill spoiler, intercooler couling(SP) slam panel, rocker cover.

The bootlid is going to have some touches done too! - Smoothed plynth, but painted gloss black, and then i'm going to get the recessed section where the number plate sits painted gloss black too.

The front bumper is going to loose its number plate recess - the upper section of the bumpers and the new 90-spec G60 bodykit are going to be de-textured and sprayed black too.

The rear one isnt very good, but it shows with the black section in the tailgate (like the G40's & Gt's had on their tailgate, but in paint! :) )

Tis gonna look sweet with the coilies and Porsche rims!

On a weeks holiday at the moment - cant afford to get the bodyshop to paint my new bumpers, So I thought I'd have a go myself and get them redone properly next year when I can pay for them to be done.

So I've stripped off the rear plynth and the front bumper & fitted my new all red tail lights -

You can see from the pic above that it didnt always have big bumpers on it as it still had its small CL style front splitter on! Considering its been used quite hard for the last 2 years the shell it lloking in ok condition! A few bits that need attention, but i'll leave the bodyshop to sort that next year!

I have a complete set of new big bumpers, smoked foglights and new grill for the front, 90 spec GTi arches, sills and door trims.

Its all being done tomorrow up at the bodyshop - getting the car up on the 4 poster rams so i done have to crawl around getting the old arches off etc!

I'd love this car i think they are ghetto. You totally need small bumpers on it though. And a single headlamp grille with vw badge CL grille i think they are called.

Well after a very early start - several cut hands and lots of swearing the old arch trims gave up the stuggle for life!

The metal work behind the trims was better than I had hoped it would be! But the whole car shows that its been painted at somepoint in its life. Whoever has painted it has just masked around the arch trims and the side mouldings - so now that i've taked the old arches and trims off you can see the marks in the paintwork. (Paint match on the passengers side is better than the drivers side!)

Got the new arches, sill trims and newly painted bumpers on. New grill and a quick going over with the trim restorer and they look like new!

here are a few pics from todays work - still got my electric rear windows to fit (which I've had in the garage since I bought the car 2 years ago!) anda to try and find some other wheels for it (was thinking either fitting the Tresers onto it or trying to find some sweet 16's for it!

Another small update!

Decided to hunt for a late spec single lamp grill - fitted my black VW centre badge.

I like extra light from my inner lamps though - so also got an upgraded headlight loom and a pair of the 130W/100 Rally bulbs from work.

Sorted!

I'll get it washed and wax next weekend and take some good pictures!

Are the hazards on or have you inverted them to US spec?

looks nice mate, like it on the steels. Would like a gtd one day, have read you can get a fair bit of power out of them.

and whats the inverted US spec hazards? sounds like the kinda thing I wanna do

They are a set of the indicators with the "running" lights in them - So I converted them to run with the sidelights. The lenses is crystal clear and i've tried a set of the ice white LED sidelight bulbs in there, but they look too bright - so put some orange side reapeater bulbs in there - think they are silvertec ones so they dont show when the bulbs are off!

Still got the front panel to remove and then fit my new smoked foglights and rig up a loom to have them on an aux switch in the dash!

Looks well smart, Are there many of these about? I have had a look but can't seem to see any. I might have to travel further next year if I get this job and I dont really want to do it in the G. Do they change hands for alot of money?

I paid higher than average price for it - but it did only have 104K on the clock - and a complete G60 interior. I've tweaked a few bits and pieces. But since buying it I've found out that there are only 55 made in this colour - and that includes all the exports to america!

One of the first generation of fast-ish diesels - but their list price was almost the same as a basic 16v GTi or a top spec'd up 8v GTi!

Looks tidy with that new front end on though, I prefer 2 lights to 4 lights on Golfs.

nice GTD!, dont see many of them about. always thought the engine bay looked mad on them! that an orginal votex center console? always wanted them if i got a mk2.
