Just wondering what the current legal situation is with regards to car window tints?

I think the max tint your allowed is 49% opacity.. atleast thats what the tinting place told my brother anyway.

you can tint the back 3 windows 100% limo black, but u can not tint the windscreen, front driver side or passenger side at all

u can get away with a very light (light smoke) tint on the front side windows.

Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 as amendedspecify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows. The limits are:

Motor Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985:

The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of

light to be transmitted through them.

Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:

The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.

The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be

transmitted through them.

If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light,

then the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.

i think you will find that most new cars like mine, the front windows are already tinted to the legal requirment even though u cant actualy see that its tinted at all

I've always wondered about this ...beacuse technically.. even light smoke breaks the "law", but 99% of police wont bother you..its only when u hve limo black tints all the way round you are car u'll get trouble....is it a point givning offence to have limoblack tints all the way round?

no tints allow forward of the B pillar

the back windows can be as dark as you like

So tints aren't tested in an MOT eh That's all I was worried about tbh.

The police can't force you to wind your front windows up if they pull you over can they...?

Most traffic cars carry the appropriate equipment to measure the level of tint.

The only endorsable offence I can see it going under is:

CU20 Causing or likely to cause danger by reason of use of unsuitable vehicle or using a vehicle with parts or accessories (excluding brakes, steering or tyres) in a dangerous condition 3

Most likely it'll either be a £30 fine or a "Sort it out, get this stamped at an MOT station to say you've done it and produce docs to avoid further action"

they dont impound.. but they give you a warning letter to go away and get it done within the required time.

if you fail to do this, thenfurther action is taken

I heard that too

My ex missus sister was made to peal them off on the side of the road or they would tow her car

sit in your car then they can't tow you :) hehe
