I'm looking for quotes on a 1996 polo 1.4cl and cannot find a quote cheaper than 2200 + deposit. its really starting to get on my tats. Why is it so dear for me? Everyone else gets pretty cheap insurance. id be happy with anything below 2000 but no chance. i am aware i live in a high risk area but for third party insurance surely it shouldnt even matter!!!! I bet you lot have a lot cheaper insurance, even younger than me!!!!!!

ok I've got 2 years driving experience which aint the same as NCB but i only passed my test last may so still have my R plates up - my insurance on an HDi DTurbo 306 is 800 3rdF&T, i live in N Ireland and its usually more expensive for insurance!

have you got Pass Plus? can help quite a bit depending on certain insurers.

also have you not considered a 1L? should be much cheaper on insurance, its not that powerful, but it will get you on the road and about. A>B

I live in Bolton too and I'm paying 1250 TPFT and I'm 18 but have a years no claims and pass plus, I paid similar to you for my first year of driving.

Bolton isnt even that bad for car crime. But hey whatever! Just got a quote for 2000 so I'm prob guna take that i cant wait to drive anymore its not guna get any cheaper so it looks like its more over time for me !!!!!!! Bring on the NCB!!!!!

Where have you been getting your quotes? Insurance search engines? Over the phone?

Sometimes it helps to actually speak to an insurance broker and see what the best deal he can get you is. He'll try his best to get you a deal, as he'll also want a percentage of the cash. Can work out quite cheap though - one broker got me a quote for £1100 or something including his fees, which seemed good until Directline insured me for £800!

as mentioned above, ever considered pass plus? knocked my premium down from 2k to £1600, the good thing is, most insurers will give you the pass plus discount straight away, as long as you complete it within 40 days.

Do you have any examples of discounts with IAM? I'm awaiting an observer with the hope of getting lower quotes in the future but the few quotes I've done online (with my current insurer Elephant) only knocked about £30 off, which is less than the course costs! I'm doing it to improve driving anyway but I had hoped for more of a discount than that. As you say not many insurance companies that I've seen have an option for IAM :(

please be careful mate, your young, your going to be driving a fast car ( I've owned one ) and you live on one of the most dangerous roads in britan and you think its better for the fun?!

dont write off a mint low milage g40 with reckless driving please, do it on a track where your safe the rest of the world is safe and you can excerise speed in a careful controlled manner :)

and I'm no saint, its a traffic light and point to point motor but its not really made for proper high speed corneringm the handling isnt the greatest for a shell with alot of power...

The IAM course takes months of lessons, preperation, reading, practicing,fuel bills and finally the cost of the test. Although you can save up to 22.5% on insurance it seems to make little or no difference to my quotes. I've been in the IAM since I was 18. Including the joining fee and all of the petrol I used it prob. cost about £500 in total. Only reason to join the IAM is to be satisfied in your self that you're a better driver.

Once your in the IAM you can get insurance through IAM select. You get the discount but it's not cheap insurance because it is good insurance. Comes with all sorts of extras I think. I've never phoned them to get a quote but I may do in future.

They are looking for more young people and a lot of groups are offering substantial discounts for under 25's. The Aberdeen group were offering a full refund on the course cost if you passed at one point.

My company have a car that we use for the IAM training. Mk2 Focus, 1.6 Sport in the same colour as yours as well Tav. They pay petrol etc as well, basically everything is paid for. Can't complain really, but yeah I haven't found much difference in quotes unfortunately.

Or you can do a RoSPA course, doesn't neccessarily make a difference to your insurance, but costs a lot less, and does just as good a job of keeping you in one peice.

I'm not convinced about pass plus, most insurers dont even mention it when you get a quote, although your driving instructer pushes it along the lines of "you must do it, gonna save you a fortune!!!" etc. cant believe how much insurance has rocketed over the years, i passed my test in 1997 and started driving some pretty quick cars including a 2l 8v mk1 golf and a daihatsu charade gtti, never paid more than about 800 quid! when you get to be an old bastard like me, some things definitely get better - got fully comp on my girlfriends new skoda fabia for £15. yes, £15.

I've never had too much of a problem with insurance, with brentace at the mo, and they gave me a very good deal on my 20vT

Yeah i see your point precisely and beleive me i've seen enough people die on my door step to make me be careful! Was a a lad lost and his girlfriend badly injured at the top of my drive bout 3 weeks ago! That far too heavy to deal with! And also I've worked my arse off to find and afford this car the last thing i want to do is risk recking it!

The most fun part is showing up a middle age man thinking he's done well in his company bmw! Show them wots actually quickest when he's looking down on you! Sleepers are great!

I'm 19 yet to pass my test (booked for the 11/05) and i got a quote for mk2 polo 1L for £1200 FPFT from directline, yet my girlfriend got her car (1.2 saxo sx) for £860 with the same company!!!

Women and their cheap insurance grrr... I'm paying £800 tpft from directline, but my area makes such a difference it's untrue. I took the policy out at 17 as well.
