Tinting rear lights (RED)

Featured Replies

Thinking of tinting my rear clusters red (MK4) but I'm unsure whether to spray over the reverse light.

Does anybody know the legality with this?

Cheers Rich

for the past 10 years i've been spraying my rear lights red (with proper tinting spray)

had no trouble from the law

BUT....at MOT time i either, put standard rear lenses in or wet & dry the paint off the reverse light/indicators

having to wet & dry the paint off the reverse light/indicators isn't a big deal cos mine usually need re-spraying after a year or so cos the paints faded

Thanks for that.

I'm sure the law wont trouble me as long as there is enough of the coloured light coming through.

I just wasn't sure about the reverse light for the MOT, don't really fancy sanding it down as I'm gonna lacquer them.

The reverse light is not a requirement for the MOT. Mine was MOT'd by the dealer that sold it to me with no bulb in the reverse light!!

Just looking at the MOT regs and it seems like the indicators is what are checked, not the reverse light.

Cheers for your help all...

I checked with my MOT station about the red light on the reverse side & he said it's not actually a legal requirment to have a reverse light, but if you do have a light that comes on when u reverse it should be white. There isn't a problem with running the red german cluster on the passenger side but he said to take the bulb out at mot time so that's what I'm gonna do :-D

fair enuff... il do that next mot time lol jus to be sure...

Yeah,my MK2 doesnt have a reverse light - I've used a left hand drive cluster on that side,so that the depth is there - the fog light has a mirror inside and you just cant get it to match otherwise. The lights are naturally completely red except for the indicators, which I've kept orange - as they're just too monotone otherwise.
