Right, I'm going to fit CBR600 Bike carbs to my polo.

I'm going to make the manifold so that's sorted pretty much...

So a few questions:

Will these carbs need re-jetting?

How does the throttle and choke cable attach(A detailed description as possible)?

Is the spacing of the carbs right for the polo cylinder head?

Do insurance company's mind too much about bike carbs going on a car?

Ok that's all the question i can think of for now... if there's anything else anyone else would like to add about bike carbs please add to the discussion

i would have said pm yoof or wait for him to reply as his mk3 is on bike throttle bodies, fairly similar

And my MK2 is on CBR bike carbs,which are also pretty similar.. I intend to do a full write-up,giving details of various applications,methods etc including my own. But until i can upload pics,its not worth doing. I've already sent Hypojam what he needs to know,but here is a little something to give you all the general idea..

They require light pressure fuel,so the fuel pump just goes back to the tank and a T piece on that line connects to the carbs. I've not connected the coolant pipes,as i dont see that id benefit from heating them,though i might set it up for a trial when i Roll-road it. A choke cable is £10 new from Mini Spares,and modifying the end of the throttle cable to fit the wheel just requires a hacksaw..

Do you know anywhere that sell bits like replacement jets? Any chance there is a book I could buy with stuff like exploded diagrams and tuning advice in it?

The main jets will have to be drilled with a precision bit,ranging from about 1.30 for a 1050cc to 1.70 for a 1600cc 16v (my 1.6 8v is on 1.50 as thats the only drill bit i had,but its fine). And manifold - It can be made in alloy by boggbros.co,in steel using a modified tubular exhaust manifold from a K-series,Volvo S40 etc or by using 40mm flanges/industrial silicone vacuum pipe,as i have.

I found Haynes manual number 3911 helpful - it covers the 99-01 CBR600F,has no less than nine pages on the carbs,and is the book Hypojam needs.

Carb parts are being phased by bike manufacturers - i have a spare set for parts. Classic Ford magazine found that the DGAS jets are interchangeable on the Yamaha R1 carbs and Burton Power sell these for less than £2 each,in any size. Bikes hold their value tho,and parts should be available for many years.

When you say drilling jets are the sizes in mm, such as 1.40mm?

Thats usually the case, it certainly is with webers eg a 100 Jet = 1.00mm

Yeah,i was told id want to drill mine out to 1.65mm but economy was my priority and its plenty rich enough at 1.5. This would be too rich,but you're best running standard jets and only then opening them however much you need - remember,the bike engine may only be 900cc in my case,but it revs to double the speed,and produces as much power as the Polo will in anything less than full race tune.

Nice links - this is the one that stirred my interest last year.. http://www.boggbros.co.uk The bloke was helpful without wanting anything,almost trying to talk out of selling me a manifold when i described the independent flange set-up id made myself,using 1.25" rubber seals as gaskets. But he spent ages giving me the advice that proved to work.

So i can see that a rear brake bike cable will fit but how does that then connect to the throttle pedal?

I didnt use one. They appear to fit,but the bike fitting is actually a fraction too big. Its easier to cut the ball itself off the throttle cable - keeping the pressed stub part still on. Best way is to cut with effort and the wire cutter in pliers,then use a fine file to trim it for the slot in the wheel. That wheel's a tad small for heavy traffic,can switch to a larger one later tho.

Hi, sorry to bring this thread up from the depths, but I'm interested in putting bike carbs on an MH or 2G engine if I can find one. Your method sounds easier than welding a manifold, could you go into more detail on how to make one from vacuum pipe please? If it's not too much trouble...

Also, I take it you can use a bike fuel pump with a T piece going to the carbs on the original feed/return fuel lines?

you can fit anything to anything with the know how ,have you spoke to p.s.d

Sorry to thread hyjack, but I've always wondered - what advantages does running bike carbs actually give? It always seemed logical to me that they'd reduce performance because of their smaller size?

Not seen a set then,i take it? The chokes on mine are 37mm,and there's four of them. Having a carb on each cylinder is effectively like mpi instead of spi. Instead of the engine snatching the mixture from one part of the manifold to another,each cylinder gets exactly what it needs. They're far more efficient.

As for my manifolds,I've used simple flanges,bolted to the head using like an O ring to seal them. Then some wire reinforced 40mm silicone hose linking the carbs to them. The carbs are held rigid by a bracket each end. I had no guide for this,i just visioned what i needed and went out and found things that i thought would fit. These parts would be found from an industrial machine parts supplier.
