quality thread think this needs sticky'ing soo we dont lose this info.

Just read the thread from the top. All very interesting and budget focused - I like it.

Although my Lupo 1.4S is up for sale due to having the popular smoking AHW engine, I was interested in Mikeys use of the 1.6 8v engine. Is this a 6N unit? If so, has anyone got any ideas about running this in a Lupo? The problem I'm having difficulty with is getting any other kind of engine to run in the car. Could a swap to carbs on the 1.6 get round the ECU/loom swap that appears to be the only answer?

All this new fangled electronic trickery is messing with my A-series and Pinto trained brain.

The only problem I can see with running the Lupo on carbs, is that you are unlikely to pass an emissions test, as the earliest 1.6 6n (yes, it's a 6n engine) is from a 1995 car...

I wonder if 1.6 Mk3 Golf engines were available before 1993, and if they'd fit a Lupo gearbox?

I'd not thought of that. A pre-cat 1.6 would be ideal.

propper interesting read for a diy carb conversion ! shame there 's not for for turbo py 's as everyone seems to keep it under wraps .... does get bitchy half way through :)

Shitty question, but what are people doing to ecu's and everything.

I'm not very clued up on carbs etc, so just wanted to know what the score is with them.

cheers

Andy's blog has everything about a turbo conversion. you could pretty much follow his blog step by step

carbs use no ecu... i'd personally scrap it completely for ease of installation and stuff!

yeh i know that but just wondered what people were doing, what about like sensors and senders etc?

And how difficult is it do swap to carbs when u have fuel injection?

thanks

rip it all out tbh. You litereally need an engine with some carbs with a pump attached to the battery. 8-) carbs ftw

Ha sounds like a plan,

But yeh sensors and all that pap? just rip it out?

everyone is talking about webber carbs, how good are SU's as iv got an opertunity to get 2 for free

SU's are crap. seriously. dont bother. coming from a mini background... trust me.

everyone here is talking about bike carbs by the way. not webers.

you may as well get thos SUs. rebuild them using a couple of kits from minisport, clean them up and sell them on a mini forum. If they look nice they'll get snapped up sharpish. you know what size they are?

Well all you need for carbs are an ignition system. There are still plenty of carb Golfs in breakers, can just use one from them (dizzy, coil, ignition module, wiring). The bike carbs just need a throttle cable, choke cable, and straight-thru fuel line. Thats it. All the complicated injection, ecu, sensors, bullshit, fuel pressure accumulator, kitchen sink etc can go in the bin.

no idea what size, came from a triumph spitfire 1300 lol. was planning to use them on my mini but tbh i cant be bothered with making the manifold, cutting a hole in the bulkhead, setting them up ext. if i get them ill probly sell, how much are they worth ballpark in PWO

no need to make a manifold for the SUs when they are so readily available. and no bulkhead mods are req'd on the mini. i think you're thinking of when fitting webers? To be honest i've no idea how much twin SUs go for. i've never really looked into buying SUs so couldn't say. Have a looksy on theminiforum or minifinity. there may be a set or two on there.

Spitfire 1300 SU carbs are 1" and 1/4. Worth a bit to Mini and Spitfire/Herald owners!

Liking the mods :-D

Bike carbs really do look like the way forward.

A cheap alternative to the weber route.

Just wondering what you're doing about the ignition timing?

Surely it would have to be altered to get the best from the carbs.

Are you using vacuum advance? I can't remember if the mk2 dizzy using vacuum advance, its electric right?

Re-curving the dizzy?

Megajolt?

Megaspark?

Also what about servo braking systems if your cars have them?

you can just use the centrifugal advance of the dizzy. provided its from a mk2 or golf (i.e. not ECU controlled)

the vacuum 'advance' is just for engine braking. and hence not required.

when mine was jetted/balanced mike (mikeanics in congleton if anyones after a carb god go here!) discovered that as my vacuum advance was only coming off 1 of the inlet tracts it was causing a fluuter at idle so disconnected it and `I'm relying on just the bob-weights in the dizzy to control the advance..

its about 12deg advance at idle at the minute...

i did find a place in wales somewhere that can modify the weights to alter to advance curve but to be honest its just more expense that isn`t really needed...

I would of thought that it also controls the ignition at idle and part throttle. Any time not on full throttle and there is vacuume in the inlet manifold. Probably where you spend most of the time if you don't have a track car.

...my vacuum advance was only coming off 1 of the inlet tracts it was causing a fluuter at idle

Tapping the manifold on each runner and running all 4 vacuume lines through a small chamber (i.e paper fuel filter) will give a nice clean signal.

You may find this quite interesting:

Just replace Megajolt with the dizzy.

Obiviosly this isn't that important, as your cars run fine, but it might help.

I guess it depends on what cam you're running.

Just my 2p.

My ignition is exactly as it was with the old single Pierburg, only without a vacuum pipe connected.

I dont see how you have variable advance for variable load in this case? My first ignition setup was bolloxed, and I'm hopefully getting another soon so I have no practical experience of this yet. I just dont see how you can get a 3D advance plot without featuring something that relates to throttle position (ie vacuum advance) ??

You wouldn't.

You'd just have a static 2D curve provided by the bob weights in the dizzy.

With no extra advance at part throttle/idle.
