TobyK posted in another thread that it is now illegal for insurers to charge different premiums for drivers on a provisional, to those who have just passed their test. Does anyone know if this is the case, and the details?

My premium will go up by around £180 when i pass my test, but if it is indeed illegal then I'm hoping to force them into keeping it as it is. Can anyone help? Is there anyone in the industry who knows the specifics?

And @ TobyK - Its not that I'm calling you a liar, just want to know if this is true cause it will save me some cash lol.

I've not heard its become illegal but from what i gather they cosider it more of a risk after passing your test because you no longer have someone with over 2 years experience sat next to you and with some control

rather than you bein sat alone now something youve never done before and i think most new drivers have an accident in their 1st year.

The reason it goes up is because you are not in a car with an experience driver - your on your own!

I know that mate, I'm not debating that issue, I just wanted to know if there was any basis for that statement.

No It's not illegal. If you think about it, the risk has changed. Same as if you mod your car for performance, the risks change!

I know cos this happened to my son, insured his first car with me as named driver while he was provisional. Nice and cheap for him, passed his test, told the insurer, qouted + £500 for himself only, but only +£350 with me still as named driver, what I mean by + is on top of what he was already paying.

yeah I cant see it being illegal. I was quoted an increased premium when I was unemployed even though I was on a limited 4000 mile policy, so wouldnt even be able to drive any more than before, even though they said I might be a higher risk in case I went shopping.

I;d say they must think that I'm more likely to get my car nicked or burnt out so that I could have claimed on the insurance, which would have made me a higher risk.

As I said, I only heard it was illegal lol. Obviously the rumour wasn't true
