Hi all

If you fancy fitting a mk1 golf, scirocco, polo, derby etc etc steering wheel to your car then you need to convert to a small spline and also if in like my situation where you purchased a boss for a mk2 polo but wanted it to fit a mk3 etc then you will also need to do the same.

start off by removing the horn from your old wheel, usually just pulls off and you disconnect the connectors from it.

next step is to remove the 24mm nut in the middle of your steering wheel BEFORE YOU DO THIS MAKE SURE YOUR WHEELS ARE STRAIGHT as it saves alot of messing around. You will need a ratchet extension, to allow you to get to the nut.

Ok so once youve got the nut off, pull the steering wheel and it will come away showing you a splined shaft, what you then need to do is pull the collar off the shaft to expose the smaller splined shaft underneath it..I've put a red line on where you need to pull the collar lip. I used a gear pulling tool to do this, you can buy them from halfords for about £9.

you tighten down the puller and it should pull the collar off the shaft, you will then see the small spline underneath

Then fit your boss, steering wheel and your done. Its suprsing how much better a small steering wheel feels.

BTW, if you haven't got a puller, it's hard as my willy in a swimming pool.

Looks like a plan, I take it you are just tightening the puller onto the collar?

That's all right then. That's what I was thinking anyway, I think there was a crank pulley puller thing under the seats of my Discovery when I bought it so I'll have a go with it.

try not to bodge it though mate. if some how you damage the smaller spline then you will never get the sleeve back on

Its a whore to go and you'll only end up with a grinder in your hand and a slightly psychotic look on your face.

I'm one of the lucky sods who can just casually go out and try this anytime I like on my scrapper, might give it a go just for the sake of it.

whose actually done this? I bought a gear puller and it just slips and is screwing up the metal, iv cut slots in for the hooks to catch and it still slips. Anyone got any alternative method/ideas??

I just got a steering wheel that fits the larger spline .. Makes life so much easier .

You just have to buy a large socket as its 1 size bigger than a standard tool kit .

so has anyone else had any sucsess with this?? may try it if any other people have done it ?

Little tip when pulling your steering wheel off, only slack the the bolt off so its still got a bit of thread left, then pull the steering wheel so that the steering wheel will hit the bolt, then obviously remove the bolt followed by the steering wheel.

The reason for this is, if you pull the steering wheel with the bolt all the way off, when the steering wheel eventually releases with all the force your applying, you could end up also paying for a new set of teeth. A story from a mechanic fired of mine.

Remember, always learn from someone else's mistakes !!! its cheaper and less painful
