Best early engine factory camshaft?

Featured Replies

We all know the GT cam is the best factory cam for the hydro heads, but what about the mechanical heads? here's a useful list I've complied:

Engines in circulation, in order of how good the inlet cam is.

1043cc engine, code GL (40hp)

Cam duration

Inlet 184°

Exhaust 184°

895cc engine, code HA (40hp)

Cam duration

Inlet: 207°

Exhaust: 225°

1093cc engine, code HB8 (50hp, formel E, mk1/2 polo)

Cam Duration

Inlet 211°

Exhaust 208°

1093cc engine, code GG8 (50hp, formel E, mk1 golf)

Cam Duration

Inlet 211°

Exhaust 208°

1093cc engine, code HB (50hp, standard)

Cam duration

Inlet 220°

Exhaust 218°

1093cc engine, code GG (50hp, mk1 Golf)

Cam duration

Inlet 220°

Exhaust 218°

1093cc engine, code HC (60hp, mk1 polo GL)

Cam duration

Inlet 220°

Exhaust 218°

1272cc engine, code HK (54hp, mk2 polo, mk2 golf)

Cam Duration

Inlet 221°

Exhaust 218°

The best cam was fitted to these three enigines:

1272cc engine, code HH (60hp mk1/2 polo)

Cam duration

Inlet 229°

Exhaust 227°

1272cc engine, code GF (60hp, mk1 golf)

Cam duration

Inlet 229°

Exhaust 227°

1272cc engine, code GK (75hp, mk2 polo)

Cam duration

Inlet 229°

Exhaust 227°

So there are actually three engines you can get the best cam from, two of which exist in this country in reasonable numbers. (HH and GF) so keep an eye out for mk1 golf engines. :)

Seems hardly worth upgrading from a HK cam to a GK one?

  • Author

That's what mr oddball said as well, but there we are. the 21hp difference between the HK and the GK must be in part due to the cam. And the more power you try and extract the more benefit the better cam will have

The biggest gain between the GK and HK is in the CR and the carb. HK is 9,5(?) and GK is 11:1. I'd say just a couple of brake is down cam. Just for comparisons sake. On a G60 you gain 4 bhp going from a 221 OEM to a 260 cam.

Just fit a 280 and be done with it, unless you are racing and the rules state that the oem must be used

any idea what a 280 is like for driveability frode? I have a schrick one going in an ABU with schleppebel head.

From what I gather, a 280 Schlepphebel gives similar caracteristics to a 268 in a hydro head. This is down to the totally different valvetrain and smaller ports.

Never seen anything aftermarket for the schlepphebel with less duration than 272. The most comon aftermarket cam to use is the 292 (except GK, which require valve cutouts with anything bigger than the Schrick 280)

Sounds great. What's smaller port wise on them? To me they look the same. The inlet valves are a bit smaller though (2mm)

what is the gt cam for copmparison?

i have the mk1 golf cam(the best mech one) just wondering if its worth whike upgrading the head to run a gt cam. as I'm putting in a gt bottom end and running a weber carb ppossible bike carbs if a set pop up too cheap.

GT cam is around 219° apparently

so the cam I've got now is better than the gt one good stuff

Whats the standard MH / 2f cams in comparison

  • Author

IIRC the MH/2G/AAV cam is around 204° and the HZ cam is around 196°

so the cam I've got now is better than the gt one good stuff

In your mk1 golf? yes. :D

yep for my golf. gaz do you know of any camshaft pulley i can fit to the mk1 cam to make it into round teeth?

unfortunately no, you can convert a round tooth block to square tooth though, it's what I'm doing on the 1.6 conversion. If you're planning a gt or 1.4 block though you will need a head from a HK or GL engine from the above list. the other heads have the wrong shape combustion chambers for a gt block

where all mk1 golf engines (1.3's? ) fitted with the better cams? Will the non hydro head cam out of the mk1 golf 1.3 fit my hydro head 1.3 (mh) and be better than the polo GT cam which i've fitted?

Will the non hydro head cam out of the mk1 golf 1.3 fit my hydro head 1.3 (mh)

sadly not

What about the 2G camshaft? Or is that not good enough for your list

It's not a mechanical head...

It's not a mechanical head...

Ahh I misread then...

lol

I have a 2G too, wonder what the cam profile is.

Realise v old thread!

am i right in saying the mk1 1.3 cams fits a mk1 1.1, and would it make any difference!

  • Author

Yes and yes!

  • 1 year later...

where on the block can i find my engine code

above the gearbox bellhousing, you'll probably need a wirebrush to clean it off.
