Just to be awkward,I'm going to say pre-73,as with free tax,still making the Life on Mars Cortina's M registration illegally displayed. The only water-cooled VW to qualify was the NSU-derived type 48 saloon,introduced in 1970,and badged as the K70 - the car that helped VW to design their own water cooled engines.

My parents 1970 renault 12 had 'normal' number plates, not black and white ones.

iirc. you dont "have" to have the original style plates. so the were probably replaced at some point....

We've had many a discussion about german plates on other forums, the black ones are illegal...BUT....the German pressed plates you can get from Dubmeister are legal because they are reflective iirc!

Digits are too small, different font and incorrectly spaced. Cameras do not recognise the digits.

TUV stickers are illegal.

D-band is illegal.

Just double checked with the parents. Car never had the plates changed, so had the post 73 numberplates from new. I vaguely remember the letters being raised, rather than flat though. Its on the DVLA and RAC registration checkers, not bad for a car scrapped nearly 20 years ago! EUC 467J

So yeah, the cortina on life on mars isn't illegal.

Why isnt it? Of course it is. Its an M plate on black and silver plates. The earliest it can be is late 73,and the first yellow/white plates were 70 J,with black and silver being stopped before 73.

a Guy i work with broke down on the motorway yesterday and whilst he was there a copper pulled over and fined him for his black and silver plates lol

But it's also half badged as a 2000E and half GXL there isn't much right with it. I was considering a Cortina 2.0 GXL as my first car, never did get one :(

Lol exactly....its not just about the D band etc etc. The font is wrong, the spacing and the size i think are different. Meaning they do not conform to the DVLA standards!

I got white front and yellow rear taken off me and a 30 quid fine becasue the Y looked too much like a V! bunch of pricks! Seriously go find something better to do!!

Oh and German plates are NOT too reflective! You'll still easy get caught by a gatso!! As i did when was down at the polo show! but the ex girlfriend was driving at the time, so she took the points bwahahahaha :-D I still run with a fresh clean license!

The best plates are the old school ones with the hard triangular 3D letters. Used to see them on old Fords all the time.

I was gonna get a pair of the "gothic font" Tippers 'plates for the loon.

then I looked at the price list. About 1/3 of the value of my car for 2 numberplates- naa!

You can legally use two types of alloy plates in reflective,though. The police used them themselves in the late 80s round here. Aluminium plates,flat,with white/yellow reflective cover,and seperate 3D plastic letters. Also pressed alloy. If they were legal then,they must be now - on pre-01 plates,of course.

The Mk3 was Launched at the 1970 Earl's Court Motor Show. But the 2000E was introduced in '73'
