do i have to get it before it goes in for the MOT or will it pass without? same goes for insurance, will i be able to get it without a V.I.C?

I didn't have this problem, as when our car was written off, it still had an MOT that hadn't expired. VICs are done by some (but not all) MOT test stations, so the rule about being able to drive to a pre-booked appointment surely must apply? Also, you could try getting it in for both VIC and MOT at the same time?

You can insure a car without needing to show an MOT certificate, but unless you're going to or from a pre-booked MOT, then you're not covered.

Oh, and the VIC has to be done first, I think.
