Right, I've been told that the generel rule for getting caught speeding 10% of the speed limit plus 2mph for tolerance?

Does this apply to all types of speed cameras??

Just don't speed.

The limit is there for a reason.

Not always, it can differ from force to force; the 10% + 2mph is only a guideline (set by the Association of Chief Police Officers).

They can prosecute for anything over the declared speed limit.

hi mate a see your from Leeds, i don't know how strict they are there but, I being a truck driver, notice that all areas are different even just counties, in London you will set a camera off doing literally 32 mph i mate just got 3 points for doing 2mph over the limit in london, and you only need to travel 45 mins away (out of lodon, not into) and you can go past cameras up to 4/5 mph over without cameras flashing there a funny thing really the best thing is as the two above just don't speed and you wil be ok.

If you feel the need to speed, satiate it safely off the public roads please. At least then if you get into difficulties you will have the right people there to help you, better than smashing into a tree at 80+ and having no one around.

If you need to travel quickly on the public roads it means you havn't planned your journey properly,

remember the 5 'P's

I understand the best policy is not to speed in the first place. i was just wondering because it seems as is no set guideline how much you can get away with. Not like I'm trying to find out how much i can get away with! I guess its always been a grey area..

Well not trying to be funny here but there isn't going to be a 'Guideline for what speeds you can get away with' is there? The speed limit is there for a reason - it's a limit, don't exceed it & if you do then you pay the price.

Don't get me wrong I'm not claiming that I NEVER exceed speed limits just that if I do & I get caught I'm fully aware that I deserve everything I get!

There are guidelines everywhere. There's one at the bottom of my street. They're usually in bloody great red circles strapped to a post - and if you miss one of them,what chance has a kid got? Its not a guideline though. Its a redline. A guideline would have 20 under the 30 - if you're doin more than 25 in a 30 zone,you're already stretching it.

Thing is 20/30/40 speed limits are put there generally because the area is classed as 'built up' which more often than not means that it is highly likely that there will be children playing around the area & so the likelihood of a child/dog running out into the road is much greater than in a 60/70 (not saying it's not at all likely in these speed limits though). And although doing 40 in a 30 might not sound like much it has been proven that the extra 10mph can (and very often does) mean the difference between life and death for the poor fragile child who was only a minute ago running round playing with his/her friends.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm being melodramatic or getting on my soapbox, it's just that people that speed through 20/30/40mph zones really bug me as I've seen the devostation that this carelesness causes.

I tend to drop to at least 5mph below the limit for any camera i spot, and i very rarely break the limits, though i also rarely drop below...

I don't trust me speedo seing as the rolling radius of my wheels and tyres is non-standard, i don't know whether it over reads or underreads, so i just take care not to take any risks.

If youre feeling the need to speed again mate, how do you fancy a karting sesh sometime? See if we can beat 2nd out of 40 again...

To be honest (and I shouldn't say this as an advanced motorist)

20mph (school zone) none-enforcable limit: Treat as 20 or 30 according to day of week and time of day (9am Monday morning, it's a 20, 1am Sunday morning, how many kids are at school?).

30/40mph: Stick to

50/NSL: Treat as advisory. Use brain and drive safely. No issues with 140mph on an empty motorway at 3am, so long as it's done safely (not in a polo though).

140mph is fine on a dry,clear motorway,yes. Unless a tyre goes,even at just 120. You've gotta see it to believe it,its quite a sight. I think only 2 or 3 people were killed in the one i saw,but I'm sure the authorities were only really bothered about the multimillion pound cost of having both sides of the motorway closed for the ensuing rush hour. Great piece of film,though - the way the Vectra went straight through the cab of a flatbed lorry like it was made of paper,having exploded over the central reservation in a sparkling display of pure action,.. Oddly,it was hard not to laugh. Human nature's a funny thing. Not the best live road death I've seen though,the school kid Escort one's best. Small group of kids,mobile phone video,he just didnt look as he walked into the road. Thats what i call bein swept off your feet! :-D

And if you pull into a row of traffic thats travelling at 60mph and you're doing 10mph then it was the lack of speed which killed. These signs could do with a little relativity,me thinks. Abuse of speed kills. Now thats better. But that would suggest that people could think for themselves. And this governmment and their dumbed-down direction cant have that for their population sheep. Education education education! But not for the millions of desperate immigrants that were let in to the country without identity checks,and now drive about without being able to speak english,let alone having a licence. The roads are more dangerous than ever,more kids are walking into roads blissfully unaware of old style educational subjects like the green cross code,with no help from their chav twenty-something parents,and people driving around in simulators more interested in trying not to spill their Wild Bean coffee on their i-pod or mobile whilst the ESP does its thing. The roads are like a field of flying bullets. They're more dangerous than ever,and the speed limits aren't quite so ridiculous as they seem to the complacent,who haven't yet realised that we're not still using the camera and ramp free 80s roads,and that its all got a bit jammed up as a result. :soapbox:

And my wheels come off every week for a thorough tyre check. I had a remould fall apart once when I was young, poor, and driving a fiat panda, so now I'm obsessive about tyre condition.

I get annoyed in thirty limits because there is alway some arse who objects to me doing 30 in a 30 and has to sit 1/2 inch from my back bumper. People should realise that driving to close to the back of you at 30 can do a lot of damage - something that could be avoided by keeping a proper distance. Don't get me wrong, I love driving fast but save it for the race track, then if you mess up you don't ruin some innocent person's life.

It's even better if you do 25 in 30 limits. Theres plenty of 30 limits I won't do 30 in because I don't want to - busy streets etc. Still, you get the mothers in their MPVs and 4x4s up your arse. They think they are being intimidating
