I've got a 1998 1.4CL Polo. Standard sound system, cheap ish CD player. Its ok, but it buzzes and distorts if I turn it up much, which isn't very good cos I like my dance music.

I want to get amped components for the doors, a sub and a new head unit, but I don't have the cash right now. I was thinking I could get an active sub now, which would hopefully do for a month or two? One i'm looking at is the fli trap 12 link

This will obviously do enough bass, what I'm not sure is how the door speakers will now sound? If the same sound is going to them, surely they will distort at the same point as they do now, ie not that loud? So I need to reduce the bass going to them I think...How do I do this? don't know if a cross over would work with this set up or something. I don't think the head unit has a sub out, just LR, RR, LF and RF..

Would this even work? Cos of it will be amped by the head unit, and some of it will be going to the line out to be amped by the sub...

i wouldn't waste my money on a sub if you headunit is poo

Best invest in a decent headunit first then build up a system.

yea even low to mid range ones sometimes have them it would be a good idea to do this first, and get half decent speaker wire to existing speakers then they will sound a bit better.

to be quite honest I've heard the fli trap and was not impressed i would steer clear of it... but on the other hand it will improve the sound youve got atm

jbl stuff is spot on! my mate has a mk4 golf and has a similar bass package with standard speakers and his sound is immense! and the bass is awesome! id deffo go for the jbl over the fli trap

Me too, generally jbl is better than vibe/fli stuff, i haven't heard anything decent from either company.

i the jbl stuff is very good

I bought the fli trap 12 as a "just for now" sub last week. Sold it this week!! absolute SHIT. i payed 60 n i feel ripped off lol. dont spend that much, like the other guys said invest in a good headunit and if you are desperate for a lil bass get a jbl sub amp package but make sure they give you the 4 channel amp, not the 2 channel (it underpowers the sub a little-clipping) however that depends on how much bass u like and the music u listen too. Yep completely agree, if you're after quality sound with good bass then steer clear of the FLI trap! I bought one of the pink ones for my G40, which is great for providing some bass as the speakers are only cheapie ones in there so it's matched pretty well. I also wanted an all in one box to pull out quickly for when I take him up the strip etc.

Before investing in an amp/sub combo I'd upgrade your headunit to as good a one as you can afford and then slowly start upgrading the rest of the system as and when you can afford it. When I first bought the ICE that is in my GTi now, I bought an Alpine head unit first and run the standard speakers from it, then when I'd saved up some more money I bought a decent set of Focal components for the front, then an amp and sub, then some rear speakers. Imho it sounds the dogs now, perfect combination of quality crisp and clear sound and bassiness

The Fli stuff is basically a Vibe sub with cheaper components.. Jbl are on par with Vibe and imo I prefere Vibe simply becuase they seem beeter quality. But sound wise they are more or less identical.

IMO If you want quality go for an alpine.

When looking at buying subs look at the RMS value.. NOT the max output.

Basically the RMS is the average power and the max value is what the sub MAY hit for a nano-second..

A GOOD sub will have a RMS of half the value of the max wattage.. E.G If you buy a sub thats 1000w you want a RMS of 500.. If thats not the case its a crap sub and will distort easily. Your better off going for a sub thats 500w max and 250w RMS then a 1000w max and 250w RMS.. If that makes sense?

But like everyone says if you want a good sound quality start with the headunit. If you just want a loud noise get the fli sub! Its not great quality.. but its loud enough..

If you want a good quality amped sub for cheap buy a Alpine 1600SWD..normally 100 quid, Its only 150 watt so its not thumping loud but creates a nice quality bass and fits under your seat!! you car wont shake but its bouncy enough for dance music. I have one of these and was so suprised about how the overall sound quality increased and the bass improved 10 fold (Mk3 polo's have small speakers which you can't really buy good bass style ones for)

I agree with sally heely.. Buy a good headunit (Alpine all the way) and build it up!
