Much as I love my little Polo 1.0 coupe I don't think I can live with its lack of power much longer.

If I found a 1.3 engine do I presume that wheels, suspension and brakes on this car will all need to be upgraded?

It depends which 1.3. If it's the 55bhp SPI (from a CL etc.) then I believe nothing else is different in terms of suspension, brakes etc.

The GT and G40 1.3s have more important differences though - different brakes on G40, different rear axle on both, wider wheels, steering damper, different fuel pumps, and more I expect.

Also, is the basic 1.3 engine fairly 'findable'? Or did it only go in very ancient Polos?

The 1.05 and 1.3 are virtually identical in terms of what parts they are fitted with. To convert to 1.3, in addition to the engine you need the minimum of the ECU and the injector unit. but should also consider the 5-speed gearbox that most 1.3s come fitted with and possibly the 1.3 inlet manifold.

You also have the option of a 60hp 1.4 ABD engine from a mk3 golf. These are much easier to come by and again they share everything with the 1.05 bar the ECU, inlet manifold and the injector. (the 1.4 and 1.3 injectors are the same)

To answer the questions in your most reecent post, the 1992 1.05 is fitted with a 45hp Single Point injection (SPI) engine, code AAU. The 1.3 of the same age (Code AAV) is the engine me and Ray2K have described above, and should be fairly easy to find although like I said above, the 1.4 should be even easier to track down.

You can in theory use a mk2 engine if you want, you just need to remove the fuel pump and blank off the hole left behind on the cylinder head

sorry to drag up an old topic but would you need the gearbox from the ABD engined Golf or would the AAV engined Polo's 5 speed fit straight on?
