Smell

Featured Replies

I've noticed recently that the interior of the car begins to smell of rotten rubbish after I've left it overnight. I've hoovered and cleaned the interior (boot as well) and can't find anything obvious like some old food left lying inside. Anyone any suggestions as to where the smell may be coming from?

Your arse???

Joke!! Lol I'm guessin the smell is gettin worse due to the hot weather too. If it were my car i would pay for it to be professionally valeted that way if it still stinks you can blame the valeter. alternatively replace your carpets but that is LONG!!!!

Maybe a bit damp inside. Park it in the sun with the boot open to drive out any moisture (ever wonderred why car dealers park their cars like that?).

I got it aswell, but mine is coz after all the rain a couple of weekends ago i get in the car to find 2" of water in the footwell.

Think its leaking from the bottom of the windscreen seal

When my sun roof was leaking i had it to :p

Air conditioning systems begin to pong if you don't dry them out (i.e. leave the cars fan blowing but with a/c off for like 5 mins before stopping to dry the condenser(i think) off)

That is of course if you have Air Conditioning

My car stinks as well but it's probably me... :ninja:

Thats where it was leaking in mine.

Mine smelt like this when I first had it, turned out the boot seal was clogged up and so was letting water in. Fixed this problem and took the boot carpet inside to dry out properly, then gave the car a good old spray with some of that Autoglym interior car freshner & it now smells lovely everyday :-D

baking soda. honest to god.

cover the fabric in it. then hoover it up. then try that shake n'n vac stuff to add a nice smell.

baking soda get rid of sick smell :?

My Scirocco had a damp problem, and it smelt of mushrooms. Though that wasnt strictly the damp. If its more sewage-like it could still be damp. Id pull the four corners of carpet up. Where its under the back seat to view the rear footwells, and the bulkhead to view the front. Preferably after a car wash.

My battery tray in the G40 had a huge hole and my carpet waas getting soaked - it was even growing! So i put a fan heater into the car for an afternoon with the sunroof open a bit and it dried out the carpet. I use fabreeze on the interior and it hasnt smelt since!

Andy

my rear drivers light seal used to leak and i'd find loads of water in it after a shower or heavy downpour.

used to stink

change your trousers... see if the smell goes ;)

Found the source of the stink. The carpet underlay on the nearside rear passenger seat was damp so I removed it by pulling it out through the slit for the front seat running rail. It was disgusting and smelt of cat's piss so I bleached the area between the carpet and body work and threw the underlay in the washing machine. Don't know the source of the leak but at least the smells gone.

What car is it? We might be able to advise on usual grot spots.

It's an R reg, 1997 Polo 1.0 Litre, five door, manual, petrol, mk3 I believe.

Tis a mk4 as far as clubpolo is concerned!

And a MK3 as far as VW and most parts companies are concerned. Best to use the 'underground' term on here, but remember its a MK3 when anyone needs to know for parts-ordering occasions.

I left that part specially for you :D

Anyone with this problem here's some tips to get rid of the nast niffs:

My brother's friends played a nasty prank on him when they stuck fish straight from the fish grocers in his spare wheel well, under his centre console, all sorts. They were all infested with maggots by the time the cause of the 'horrible smell' was discovered.

His car was effectively destroyed inside by that, but he mistreated it anyway - he couldn't care less about his cars.

But if any of my mates did that to me, I would murder them. Check you haven't got any pals who are secretly dickheads
