I have recently become the proud new owner of a 2001 Y-reg Polo GTI (60,000 miles).

Am very happy with the car in general, but there are a few niggles I would appreciate some advice on (issues are "between" forums, sorry!).

Once the car has been running for 10 - 15 minutes, I occassionaly here a feint "tooting" noise. Sounds weird, I know, but it genuinely sounds like a distant car horn... It only happens when I touch the accelerator gently, but in any gear and at any speed. Any ideas?

Just to point out, I insisted that the dealer change the cambelt before I bought it. And am fairly sure I didn't hear the noise during the test drive...

One other issue is the brakes. They're not the most powerful, but I guess that could just be down to age.

However, when I brake at speed (say 70 on the motorway), the car/wheel judders quite a bit. It stops ok, i.e. the brakes definitely work, but there is a bit of shaking. I have read this could be due to a warped brake disc, but isn't this something the dealer should have sorted in the pre-sale service?

Anyway, would be grateful for any advice!!!

not a 5 min drive then mate i'm afraid.......i would recommend the same

if you start to mess with it yourself they may turn round and refuse to do anything.

Braking vibrations - try tracking, wheel bearings, wheel balancing....if standard - swap front and back wheels to see if continues. Could be warped disc wouldnt say so tho if the whole car vibrates.

Not sure if "tooting" is the right word, perhaps "beeping" would be better :)

It's not what you'd immediately think of as a bad noise (unlike knocking or grinding for example), but it does get a bit annoying...

what noramlly happens when the car is parked up for a long period on the dealers forecourt is the brake pads are left touching the disc and they kinda 'stick' on there and the residue is allmost impossible to remove... i would try fitting a new set of discs

I would doubt it being the tracking tbh becuase it only vibrates under braking, same goes for bearings and balancing. If it was balancing it would start to vibrate from 30-40(ish)mph and get worse as you accelerate. The symptons that you describe I would say are a warped disc especially if it is causing the whole car to vibrate, vented discs don't mean that they can't be warped just that it takes a hell of a lot more to wapr them.

I've heard a lot of people on here complaining about the general crapiness of the GTi brakes but personally mine are really good, I've never had any problems with them.

If they are warped tho it is highly likely that the pads are also glazed which will be reducing your braking effectiveness, might also be time for a brake fluid change as it's done 60k?

Just one more quick question

Having done my research on these cars, I mentioned the pedal box issue to the dealer before buying, i.e. asked him whether the car had had the recall work done.

He called me later to say he had contacted VW with the chassi number and been told that the recall was not issued for that model (2001 Y-reg).

I therefore I assumed the matter had been sorted by then, and the recall was only issued for earlier models...

Is this the case?

according to the VOSA recall page and the AA recall page, there wasnt a "recall" issued.

i know simmy on here's snapped (not on a GTI either,... but i think the pedal box had the same part number as GTI so they did it anyway)

and he took it to vw, kicked off and they replaced it for nowt

as far as i know it wasnt a recall... just a "free fix" if it broke

A VW sticker with Manufacturer Ref : 30C1
