i went to kwik fit to get my car serviced and M.O.T'd and they said it passed but there was

*slighty oil leak from sumpgasket

*oil leak from gear box seal

*osr shocks leaking

*exhaust corroded

*battery needs replacing

*front two wheels are close to the limit

surely if these things are true it shouldn't of passed....

Leaky rear shocks shouldn't pass unless it's very mild, everything else is an advisory. Normally phrased as "We advise you allow us to rip you off for the following..."

*slighty oil leak from sumpgasket - I challenge you to find a car more than 5 or so years old without a leaky sump gasket.

*oil leak from gear box seal - same as above

lol cheers hopefully its mild leakage then.. we had to wait like 2 hours for the oil to come in.. and then i've been told when you replace the sumpgasket you have to drain all the oil... god..

To change the sump gasket you need to pull the sump off... which is the lowest point of the engine. Not trying to make you sound like a noob or anything, but just so you know you aren't being ripped off

no i know its under neath the engine... just what some other dude said.. oh well shall see how it goes.

also quick question about drive belts... mine was changed at 30,000 miles... and its coming up to about 76,000 miles.. anyone know when they should be changed?

If you mean cam belt then VW now say every 4 years

For cam belt I have been told between 40k and 60k

Funny how MOT stations work, mine passed last week when in fairness she shouldn't. I've got illegal numberplates, the exhaust was rubbing the bodywork, two tyres are very close to the limit and my side repeaters are showing the wrong coloured light (not orange). Granted, the garage know the car pretty well as they have done alot of work on it which probably helped. Where cambelts are concerned and how much they cost compared to a new engine, I change mine every 30K.

cambelt change reccomended @ 4years now, I've seen them break on vehicles with 30k,5years old!!!!

battery can only fail if insecure or leaking!!

*exhaust corroded - if it's not blowing then it wont fail.

*battery needs replacing - as long as the engine runs enough to do the emissions test then they don't care, as long as it's securely fastened down.

*front two wheels are close to the limit - not a fail unless they are below the limit. They could give you an advisory notice to say that they need replacing soon but it's no reason for a fail.

My mums car passed and it came back and I borrowed it to go down the shops on the same day about 10 mins after she bought it home, anyway i went to clean the windows no washer fluid - Fail, on my home dude pulls up next to me mate 1 of you are brake lights isnt working - fail.

ok maybe they had happened in the last 15 mins but i highly doubt it just think they were being lazy.

I don't think I'd be complaining to VOSA if an mot station passed my car even though it had an empty washer bottle... But the brake light yeah. Brake light faults can come and go though with dodgy connections, and there is a chance it could have blown just after the test. But unlikely.

My car passed it's MOT last year and within the week the fuel filler neck started dripping petrol :S. Obviously glad it passed but still some people wouldn't notice/do anything about it and would be driving round dripping fuel for 12 months, bit dodgy really. Maybe it had a fairly empty tank for the mot!

I had a Suzuki Vitara that passed its mot with a leaking rear brake pipe and bald (as in you couldn't see ANY tread on the tyre) front tyre. When I sold it I put in the ad "MOT" (with the symbols). A bloke phoned up and asked why I'd done it like that, and all I mentioned was its a Colins Tyres mot, and he knew exactly what I meant...

I also bought a Land Rover Discovery with 11 months mot and a chassis that needed patching up...
