What would be the case with 1.0 coupe engines?

How would i go about curing an idle issue? Service ? Clean the ISV if it has one?

I am in the process of collecting a car with a 1.0 engine and need to get it home...

Will it be a 1.0 8v spi engine with an ECU in the fox model coupe?

The idle issue could be a bad earth, alternator not providing enough charge or duff battery?

Hmmm - i'll get it here and have a gander myself but hoping it has an ISV i can clean and see when it last had a good service - if the HG has gone then i could be in for a surprise...

Any other details on the engine anyone can shed some light on for me having never seen or worked on one would be great!

My 1.0 spi didn't like to idle until I changed the lambda sensor, blue temp sender, plugs, leads, sorted the ignition timing and maybe a couple of other things lol.

I'm not sure what an ISV looks like. But the spi's idle is controlled by the ECU.

I have a 1.0L ECU You can have for £5 delivered?

If it's a Mk3 1.0, then they're practically all the same, with the AAU Spi unit.

It doesn't have an ISV, or for that matter, any mechanical way of altering the idle speed or mixture set up. There are quite a few things which will effect the idle, but what problems are you having? tobyk mentions most of the culprits.

Looking at the engine the rail is cracked...

I need to get a rail sorted, lambda and blue temp sensor ASAP then really...

Other than that the last service time is unknown - it seemed to idle better when warm after a run - could that indicate a bad circuit or dodgy alternator?

I don't think your symptoms are circuit or alternator related although it's hard to tell. Rule out the alternator by measuring the voltage across the two battery terminals with the engine running and ALL electrical consumers switched on. I've misplaced my Haynes, but IIRC, the reading should be no less than 14.5v. If that's wrong, someone correct me.

Other than that, a car which is overdue a service will never run at its best, and in your case for peace of mind, I’d carry out a service. This should assure the very basics are in good health and can often go a long way in improving running. As part of that service, new plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm and temp sender would be on my list in addition to the basics like oil and filters. These are quite cheap (although I guess it all mounts up). If the lambda is broken, the idle would be poor when hot, not cold.

Just to clarify, you said 1.0 coupe so I guess you are talking about a Mk3?

Yup 1.0 coupe Mk3 Fox model beast...

Was an ebay find by my dad who asked me to go grab it for him but it doesn't like idling...

I got the battery on charge and gonna take a look today to see what i can do...

Could be the ignition timing, mine was set up badly before it was alright with a bit of throttle and a bit of load, but otherwise it would miss a lot from idle and low revs.

OK - I am not able to sort the ignition timing myself as i think a timing gun is required?

I have no multimeter also so need to check the alternator is giving enough charge - it doesn't like having the lights and fan on at the same time etc...

The leads looked and felt brittle and the cap looks old too - so probably hasn't had a service in a while...

She is idling better though after cleaning the earth points and slightly adjusting the throttle cable rest screw,

I'll see what else i can do this week and if anyone has a rail plastic thingy that hold the wires etc in place on the inlet manifold - let me know

I also have a set of nearly new leads & good condition dizzy cap.

I should have all the bits of the inlet manifold aswell.

Depends if Micky has weighed in the engines or not. If not I have all those bits :)

I started her up again last night and she ran on her own again so i have it idlling now instead of dying all the time...!!!!

Service it and get the timing looked at - then hopefully she will be mucho's better!
