4 to 5 Cog Swap Advice.

Featured Replies

My daily ride breadvan is a nice low mileage (2G) unit, but tends to scream along due to the four speed box.

I have a five speed unit from a coupe s model (MH engine) and wondered if i need to swap the MH flywheel over with the 2G one when I swap the box over?

Anything else I need to consider?

nope, pretty much straight swap. Technically the 5-speed linkage and anti roll bar are different but usually you can get away without swapping either. Just watch ouy for the anti roll bar rubbing on the gearbox casing. If it's close get hold of a one off a mk3 polo or 5-speed mk2 and swap it over, should be cheap from a scrapyard if you need it.

Thanks hayesey,

Guess what I'm up to next week?

i'm also on the prowl for a 5 speed box, what happens about the speedo drive? same for 4 speeds and 5 or will i have to get clocks aswell

speedo cable is the same for both i think.

yea i really should have worded that differently, what i meant was will the speedo be accurate, i got my clocks with a rev counter out of an older polo and they exagerated a bit on the speeds, i swapped the speedo side of the clocks in the end. was it the age thing or a 2 different gearboxs thing.
