Hey guys, my car is in need of a new water pump and timing belt replaced.

Obviously being a student money is tight etc etc i was considering my options of having a go at replacing these parts myself in an effort to keep costs down.

I just had a few questions about how do-able a job is for me, or am i better to just leave it to a garage to do?

any advice appreciated, cheers

ross fitting the waterpump isnt that hard a job its the timing that would catch me out cos I'm not that clued up on how to do it and got a mate to do mine. but saying that i fitted mine whilst the engine was out however you could do the parts fitting yourself and then get it timed up properly afterwards as long as you mark up and try to keep the belt in the same place. as far as i can remember all you will have to do is drop the coolant. take the cam cover off. remove the 3? 10mm bolts for the waterpump, take it off and the belt. refit the new waterpump and with any luck as long as you dont move the car the pulleys will remain in the same place refit the pump and belt, refill the g12 and that should be sorted. i say give it a shot. surely you boys up north can come together and give it a go. I've never done a clutch but me, Kam and panda are giving it a go tomorrow. - bites fingers-

thanks for that dan, you'll have to let me know how you get on with the clutch as thats another thing thats on the agenda this summer. definately a daunting task.

Del and Tav are pretty clued up with most of the goings on of most of it all so will see if they are happy enough to tackle things then we'll go from there i reckon.

Many fear this job but its easy. Rock the car whilst in 5th gear until both crank and cam wheels are lined up with their markers,then take out of gear. Its now safe to cut off the belt,and simply ensure that when you've put the new belt on and tensioned it,the wheels are still lined up with their markers.
