Got a starting/fuelling prob with the birds Polo

Fuel pump is on, fuel is getting through but it's not firirng.

Any idea's?

It's a 1993 1043 if that helps.

Is it single or multi-point injection?

Could it be injector/s that need a clean?

Seems to be sparking ok.

If i fire quickstart/carb cleaner/fuel direct into the carb it tries to start, but won't continue to run.

Is that the enjector not getting fuel through? Can it be cleaned?

Perhaps it's getting too much fuel. Mine just refused to start one morning (was a bit reluctant to start the morning before but ran fine) and it turned out to be the temp sender. It had gone open circuit, making the ECU think it was -40C, so it just flooded the engine. Are the plugs really sooty/ wet with fuel shortly after trying to start? If so, unplug the blue temp sender from the thermostat housing and see if it will then start.

Process of elimination time

Spark is good, plugs are ok, fuel pump 'sounds' fine.

How do i tell if fuel is getting to carb. Is it visual if i strip air filter and surround off? Should i be able to see fuel going into the carb?

Yeah, you can see it, and all you have to do is remove the lid from the air filter housing. Right in the centre, there is a dome shaped housing which a semi-transparent orange 'dot' on the top. This is where the fuel injector is housed. Look down the throttle and when cranking the engine (the latter done by an assistant, obviously ), you should be able to see fuel being injected.

BTW: if the hall sender is broken (housed in the distributor) I’m almost certain you wouldn't get a spark, so we can rule that out for now

Right problem (seemingly) solved

No fuel going into the carb...................................soooooooooo....................is that a blocked injector?

Can i take it apart and clean it easily or is it a job for the experts?

Or is it the fact that the pump is shafted and there isn't enough pressure to get the fuel to carb?

Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on? I don't know if you can clean an injector yourself so I can't comment there.

Yeah it comes on. They are quite loud really aren't they.

Mine is, dunno if they all are. I'm thinking that if the injector is blocked then you'd be best just replacing it with another one, cheaper than getting it cleaned.

When I changed my throttle body, I was cranking the car over for ages and nothing happened, no fuel at the injector at all, so I just primed the fuel pump over and over again and it fired. Maybe try that? It won't cost you anything, anyway.
