engine looses power at high revs, then dies...

Featured Replies

right, when i'm driving sometimes normalls around 5k rpm the whole car judders horrible, lurching backwards and forwards and starts to loose power. to stop the juddering i have to take the car out of gear and wait a few seconds, by which time it normally stalls....

i can normally just drop it back into gear and bump start it and carry on, but sometimes the i have to pll over and stop. when i do this i have to wait quite a while for the car to start....

i have checked all the fuel lines and the only thing i can think of is blocked jets in the carb....

but haveing limited experience with carbs i do not want to take mine apart unless i have to...

any ideas what it could be guys?

thanks

hey mines done the exact same thing and i changes the spark plugs to bosch super4's and it runs as smoothe as f**k lol if that dont work then i dunno m8 but check you are plugs

fuel pump not keeping up?

How clean does the inline fuel filter look?

When I've had a blocked carb jet it's been gutless at 2000-3000 and really high revs has sucked the dirt through!

Does it go all jerky, or does it feel like the cable from the accelerator pedal has turned into jelly?

If it's the former I'd bet on the Hall sender in the dizzy.

If the latter, take the air filter off and try spraying carb cleaner down the carb while a mate revs it...

(stationary of course).

the filter is brand new....

i think it does all jerky, its like I'm pumping the brakes.....

what do i do about a hall sender?

Mine used 2do the same...I got a new distributor. This contains the hall sender.

Try that?

right

the other day at work it broke down in the same way because the float chamber was empty, I've replaced the fuel pump and the chamber now fills as it should.

BUT

it refuses to idle and i have to pull the choke out nearly all the way, even after driving for 20 minutes, the engine behaves as if it is off choke above 3k rpm perfectly but will instantly die if i lose the choke.....

could replacing the dissy sort this or is it a problem int he carb?

i am now without transport, so any help would be greatly appriciated.....

bumpety bump

I'm stuck at home with only the internet to amuse me help!

its the contact swich built in to the rotor arm its there to protect the engine from over reving

this is normal

cool

what do i need to fix/replace to sort it then?

no need to replace it m8 its sopost to do that for the engines protection,to stop it just dont rev it so high.

  • Author

i dont understand......

are you saying the engine is behaving normally?

yes m8

  • Author

it refuses to idle below 2k rpm and has to be kept alive by having the choke almost full

this isnt normal

no its not you need to have the carb reset by the sound of it m8

reset the carb?

Set up?

i dont understand :(

I disagree with mnted - it doesn't sound like a rev limiter cutting in at all. If you've ever revved a car with a limiter in the rotor arm, it reaches max revs then cuts out for a fraction of a second, then kicks back in (as the engine starts to slow) and (presuming you've still got your foot on the throttle), revs up again and so on - about four times a second. What you're describing is nothing like that. Initially I thought fuel starvation - but you've said the fuel filter is brand new. I don't know what car you have but are you talking about the metal canister by the petrol tank at the back of the car ? That's where the fuel filter is on my '93 model. Before you go changing expensive bits like distributors, I would make sure you're getting a good flow of petrol first. Have you tried disconnecting the fuel feed to the carb and shoving it in a jar and turning the ignition on ?

If you're certain that it's not fuel starvation, then try a distributor from a scrapyard. How new are your plugs ?

I'm pretty sure the fuel isnt an issue into the carb, I've done the jar thing and it pumps out a fair ammount and the swirl pot is always full.

fuel system goes: tank -> lines though firewall -> inline filter in engine bay -> mech fuel pump -> carb

the plugs are less than 6 months old and bosch ones

i had the rac out today and he said he thought the carb was knackered, is this possible, i dont know enough about them to know if this is the case.....

the car is now not staying alive even with the choke on FULL, i had to go to the body shop today and had to left foot brake all the way and use my handbrake while moving.......

Carbs dont just wear out...

What they do is fall out of tune, somewhere near the base of the carb there should be an idle mixture screw have a go at twiddiling with that, 3 turns out from in is usually a good starting point.

There isn't many adjustable things on carbs generally.. usually idle speed and idle mixture screws

If you still have problems take the carb apart give everything a nice clean and reassemble...

i did have a play with the idle screw, i went from all the way in to out, and it wasnt happy all the way. ill fint the mixture screw tomorrow and fiddle with that.

I don't really know enough/am confident enough to take it apart and put it back together, i'm gunna take it to my garage i think. i was hoping someone else had had the same problem before and there was a known fix. i

thanks a lot

(i love this forum)

will

When I had as similar problem, my fuel pump eventually died. Once replaced, it was perfect! They only cost £10 from GSF with the discount, so worth a shot.

Also is your car early or late mk2? (what reg?)

  • Author

early (a reg) I got a new pump last week.......

How are you getting on with this?

Have you replaced and gapped the points in the distributor? This could be the problem.

Is it by any chance a 1043cc? Cos it could be perished vacuum pipes for the advance/retard bits...
