Advice on engine problem/ cure

Featured Replies

I bought my old mk3 1043cc SPI back last night and sinc I sold The body is stunning on the car and the engine really lets it down. It deserves and nicely running, smooth engine!

The advice I need is do I get the problem fixed for what it is, or do I just replace the whole lump with a nicely running 1.0?

Thanks, Joe

I must add the the headgasket and cambelt were changed last week but the guy didn't change the oil when he did the swap! Obviously it's due an oil change first!

Also, the engine has a milage of 80k so shouldn't be at its grave yet!

he changed the head gasket with out changing the oil?

YES! It baffles me!

Its entirely up to you what you feel the best option is. a new tappet set will probably equate to what you can pick up a 1043 for, but do you stick with what you know in terms of knowing pretty much whats been replaced, or do you take a gamble with a donor engine and potentially run into more problems?

Karl.

I'd just slot a 1.3 in but that would be insurance fraud and a few people aren't keen on that

I am a worrier and wouldn't dare pretend it was still a 1.0.

As for the tappets. It's stopped knocking... for now! I am hoping the oil change will cure it properly. I've also just swapped over to the standard airbox from the K and N that the previous owner put over the throttlebody. The engine got very hot from driving while using this yesterday!

I'll see how it goes for a day or two and then purchase appropriatly depending on how lucky I am in finding a nice engine.

Had someone just bolted up a K&N straight to the TB then? Like a pancake filter? Or was it a cone filter?

Hmm, those filters arent ideal given their positioning and the amount of heat soak they can suffer from, more so on a low powered engine to begin with.

Mine is the same Joe - runs lumpy, rattles a little, and generally sounds tappy when cold - but when warm runs fine...

I was thinking about alternator, water pump, cambelt and service to cure my one - but don't wanna spend £150 on it!

If i were to do the above i'd throw on a new HG aswell...

Just to clarify it wasnt me who knackered up the polo, it was the lad i sold it to. Just thought i'd add that  .

Anway..... Joe the 1.3 wont be a significant amout to insure mate, so that might be an easier option.

Yeah. If my 1.0 last for a bit longer then a gt engine will be the way forward. I have a flat battery.

Yeh, it wasn't Nick who wrecked the engine. It was the next owner.

The cone filter was just over the throttle body. In fairness it isn't a stupid thing to do as it still works but as said it just sucks in hot hair from the engine.
